Any dog adopted from the local Humane Society or animal shelter. Preferably a mixed breed. There are so many homeless pets out there, why encourage puppy mills? Often, too, the mixed breeds do not have some of the genetic tendencies for certain illnesses or physical problems that some purebreds have. But it all depends on what you are looking for in a dog. If you want little shedding, try a Poodle or a Chinese Crested. If you want a play dog for the kids that is also a good watchdog, try a Lab (Labrador Retriever).

Miniature Poodle...because they are the most intelligent of all the breeds. They are also loyal, trustworthy, good natured, and incredibly loving...and they are great bird dogs--they excel as field retrievers and as water retrievers. They are also used as trackers. The miniature poodle is, in fact, so easily trained that it was disqualified from Top Dog Competition under the guise of "the poodle is not in the Sporting Group;" if truth be told, the so-called Sporting Dogs had a hard time beating the miniature poodle in competition. To lose to what their owners deemed a foofoo dog was just too embarrassing.
Do notice that I am lauding the virtues of the miniature poodle...not those of the toy or standard poodles.
The poodle (Poodhal) originated in Germany, where the coat was cut back, making it easier for them to work in the field and in the water... The fancy trim was invented, much later, in Marie Antoinette's court in France.
Downside: Lots of gooming.

I never thought I'd have a favorite until we got our Schnauzer (Standard.. not mini.. I love the mini's., but they're too terrier-ish for me).
She only barks as a territorial thing.
She rarely sheds.
She doesn't stink like most dogs I've known.
Smarter than a freaking I don't know what.
Cute as anything.
Temperment is just absolutely amazing.
Playful and hyper, but not super hyper. 20 minutes with a play friend and she'll wear herself out pretty good ;)
However, if we didn't go to classes... there's no way we'd be in charge.. she would be totally running the house. So tiz not the dog for everybody.
But if you have time to train and are willing to realize us humans are the ones that need the training, more than the dogs.. you'd be crazy to not get a Standard Schnauzer.

I have owned diffferent breeds in the past.
My absolute favorite is the American Pitbull Terrier !! A good, loyal, friendly, funny, smart, and simply beautiful dog. They are good family dogs and they love children. It's all about how you raise them and socialize them. (all dogs need to be socialized, no matter what breed).
TO IBCALIGRRL: Sorry to hear about your pitbull. Hope you will be okay. If you don't have another dog, maybe you should get another PITBULL that needs a good loving home. :)

My favorite breed is me. I'm a golden retriever. I love kids, am pretty smart, very loyal and I have lots of energy. I love living with my owners because they have kids who I can play with and they take me for lots of walks. I'm almost perfect except I like to eat things that I shouldn't. Actually, I eat almost everything I get a hold of, such as plastic bags, rope, garbage, etc. So you just have to keep an eye on that stuff.

The Brittany, formerly known as the Brittany Spaniel. Not only are they the most adorable dogs there are, but they are loving, playful, and are a pretty good watch dog--which everyone needs to have around. Their eyes are very intelligent and they will give you nothing but love.
