There are many ways. Software for linux comes in many formes. As binary file (RPM,DEB,PKG) that you can install through X interface via GUI installer or in the shell. Other form of distribution of linux software is as a source code that has to be compiled.

Refer manual pages:

man makefile
man gcc

also you need to make a program executable after you had compiled it.

Say you have a program named "myprogram" so after you compile it type:

chmod 755 myprogram

In OpenSUSE I believe there is a program called Yast. This is a frontend for installing "packages", precompiled programs ready to use. Find the program you want and install it (I don't know the exact process).

If you can't find the program you are looking for in Yast, you will need to download and compile it yourself (look in the README and INSTALL files for help).

Note that you can't install Windows programs in Linux, unless you want to try setting up WINE.
