How come most people cannot spell worth a crap on here?

Twelve year old kids SHOULD be able to spell better than most of the posters here. I blame government schools/indoctrination and socialization centers for putting more emphasis on situational ethics, self-actualization, and self-esteem than on math, science, literature and language skills.

Note to parents: They have done testing and studies that prove conclusively that the highest concentration of High Self-Esteem is in Federal Prisons.

To answer your question and to add to what other people have already written, there are lots of factors that explain why so many people (I wouldn't say "most") fail to spell correctly in this forum.

Laziness is one contributor to the problem. Too many people simply don't take the time to use the spell check function provided by Yahoo! Answers. However, even those who do often fail to notice errors they've made because there's no grammar check for them to use. You almost certainly have stumbled across someone who typed "to" when he should have typed "too."

Sadly, a lot of other people are ignorant or stupid. A fair number probably were given the opportunity to learn about the English language throughout grammar and high school, but they rarely applied themselves in class and they didn't use the information they were taught outside of it. Stupid! Others, however, didn't get the same opportunities in school. They went to schools where teaching the basics of English was not emphasized as much as it is in other places. Therefore, they simply don't possess the knowledge required to spell correctly. Ignorant! This outrage does speak very ill of our public school system because there does exist a disparity in this country between the "have" districts and the "have-nots." Also, some people come from disadvantaged homes where education is not valued, and whatever might have been earnestly taught in schools was lost at home because the parents of these people didn't reinforce it.

A fair number of people here are immature--not simply because they're twelve. They think nothing of being juvenile, though they may be well into their twenties or thirties. Indeed, they think they're funny (yeah, guys, ha ha). They answer questions they don't have any business answering. They post dumb questions, and they do it because they are meddlesome and want to irritate others with their puerile thoughts. Virtually everything they type is a form of graffiti. But that's their game.

Some people who use Y! A aren't proficient at writing English because it's not their first language. But I must tell you that you usually can distinguish these people from the ignorant, the lazy, the foolish and the stupid because they at least try to communicate in an intelligent manner.

Lastly, and most notoriously in my opinion, there are those who think it entirely appropriate and cool to use text message short cuts in their writing. These people bother me the most. You wouldn't think it hard to type "you are" instead of "ur," but apparently for these people it is. They pepper all their answers with this offensive text message language to their own discredit--at least from my vantage point and that of others who share my opinion.

No, it is because this forum has members all over the world, and for many of them English is a second language.
