It can't see the boot sector of the hard drive. It may not be able to see the hard drive at all. It could be that the whole hard drive is corrupt, it could be it can't see the boot sector but for whatever reason, it can't boot from your hard drive. Check in the BIOS to see if the hard drive is listed as available, at least you will be able to confirm that the drive is functioning. If not, check the connections, (the IDE or SATA cable and make sure the power cable is secure). If it is and the drive refuses to work, try mounting it in another computer (with Windows installed) and see if it works. If not, the hard drive is dead or is damaged beyond repair.

Try the utility program from the drive manufacturer to repair the MBR- master boot record and see if it corrects that problem. Often, re-writing the MBR or scanning and repairing the FAT file allocation tables can resolve the drive issue...
If not, the controller on the drive may be going bad and its gone... time for a new drive...

Something has messed up your Master Boot Record (MBR).
It is pointing to the wrong address of you boot drive.
I would suggest reinstallation of your XP.. You would not loose any data.. Just have to reinstall XP over the current installation..
PS: while installing.. donot choose "repair" choose install and install over the existing XP when asked for.
