My dog is a Jack Russell and he likes to lick my face. Is he doing this as a sign of affection, a greeting or to dominate?

Affection--Absolutely! Jack's are funny temperamental little dudes (I say dudes because we had a little one, just lost him:(. Anyway, we also have a Kurr who licks and licks and licks. She is the most affectionate dog in the world. When we first got our Jack, he was about 7 mo. and a little stand offish, but after being around Kurr he really became an affectionate licker as well. The biggest dominance issue that we dealt with was height. Jacks tend to have the Napoleon complex and always want to be higher than who they want to be dominate over. He would always lay at my feet, but would sit higher on the couch than our female.--Hope that helps.

It's affection and greeting, but it is also a sign of submission. Your dog definitely sees you as the Alpha. Quite an achievement for a Jack Russel!

Affection and submission. Wolfs lick the mouth of the alpha pair in submission and wolf pups lick their mothers face to cause her to regurgitate food.

A dog would be weird if he didn't lick your face! Of course it's a sign of affection! I hope you give him kisses too! (not with his toungue or something weird...top of the head.)

I have a daschund who likes to do that too. I think it's for affection. He licks his butt so I don't care one way or the other! He's not licking my face!

Sign of affection, and a greeting.

It can be affection at first, but when you want him to stop then you need to tell him "no" firmly. Dogs can dominate if we allow them too! He needs to know when he is allowed to lick you and then when you make the command for him to stop then he needs to stop.

I definitely think it's affection. My Lab does this every time he walks up to someone familiar... gets close and licks arms, legs, faces, hands..whatever he can find!
