I think when we're dreaming, our minds are sorting out all the issues we've encountered, with input from memories, experiences, ideas, wishes, etc., and even some times give us answers to our problems!
Our bodies move upon one of those thoughts, and turn into robotic movement because the mind's processes advance on to the next issue and change more quickly than the body can carry out the thought.

Sometimes, Its a dream so there might be some reference to reality but likely they aren't where they think they are. Some sleepwalkers do some amazing things but most can't even open a door and will run into walls.

I beleive so, one day, I was 16 then I got up went downstairs, mom and dad were in the kitchen, I pulled down my pants and sat on the garbage can, then went to the bathroom and sat on the toilet, I came out and mom and dad were laughing, I asked what was so funny, they could'nt even speak, the next day they told me, I could have died from embarassment! So I assume I knew somehow I had to go to the bathroom.
