The "eye for an eye" and "tooth for a tooth" are part of the widespread ancient Near Eastern law of retaliation. In Israel and other cultures, this principle was enforced by a court and refers to legalized vengeance; personal vengeance was never accepted in the Law of Moses, except as a concession for a relative's murder (see Numbers 35:18-21). The Old Testament did not permit personal vengeance. Vengeance was actually the prerogative of God (See Deuteronomy 32:35).

The primary purpose of the "eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth" law was to ensure that the punishment for a crime was indeed fitting for the crime. It was designed to provide fairness or justice in the penalties for crimes committed. For example, consider the following scripture.

Exodus 21:22 through Exodus 21:25 (NKJV) 22"If men fight, and hurt a woman with child, so that she gives birth prematurely, yet no harm follows, he shall surely be punished accordingly as the woman's husband imposes on him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. 23But if any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, 24eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

The penalty must be fitting to the crime. That was again the whole purpose of "an eye for an eye." This was important because in some cultures the penalty for a crime could have far exceeded what would have been considered just or fair. So it appears at first glance that the Bible supports the idea of just retaliation.

The bible was written by many different individuals, it has been censored, translated and edited to fit a myriad of religious and political purposes, not least the acquisition of power. Do we really need a book to tell us that f*cking people over is a bad thing. The bible is a political manifesto designed to take control of peoples lives, so that the selfish and greedy don't have to work for a living at the expense of those who do. I am awake dude, peace love and anarchy.

i'm stunned. I especially much stick to that, yet what a piece out. If i attempted to declare that, understanding I circulate away gaps, i'd fill in all of the gaps and no person ought to get it then. I lose the two way so how do you destroy out with it? i'd say that the Bible is a depiction and we can endlessly be awareness it. inspite of the spirit, in simple terms as technology in simple terms isn't completed learning. As to how a techniques religions have long previous off, too a lot. too a lot to enumerate, too a lot to stick to, too a lot to remark on. The bible is used to analyze the inspired utterances, yet with out the spirit, you would be able to declare we've not have been given a ghost of a large gamble. i'd upload that we've 2 eyes and notice 2 perspectives. we've 2 hemisphere of the ideas and we see 2 perspectives. each is right observing the fringe of the coin you look at. the two are mandatory, yet to a pair human beings different words are mandatory to declare a similar element. Ever word that? I swear life is created from obvious contradictions, paradoxes that are no longer probably contradictory. with out 2 eyes you are not getting a 0.33 length. The scriptures are a minimum of three dimensional, does not you wager? isn't that the spirit that brings life on a similar time as the literal awareness convey dying? i presumed every person knew that scripture and approximately no longer arguing over words. i do no longer think of contentious human beings can ever comprehend human beings. i comprehend this is arguable to declare it, yet i think you would be able to desire to hearken to somebody very no longer situation-free. i'd say that distinctive women persons are 4 or 5 levels in, working example. i do no longer think of the Bible is that shallow the two. It takes love and listening to the spirit to get it nicely suited. am i able to never supply a quick answer. "however the question looks so significant", he protested loudly. The Bible is like physics. in case you comprehend it, you could incredibly fly. in case you do no longer, you had extra effective stay on the floor. regrettably mankind will never get off the floor that way.

Your concern is legitimate. I as a Bible avid reader and believer am also puzzled by these and many other contradictions. I'll try to summarize my take on this:
I see the Bible as a still ongoing collective effort to piece together God's and human revelations that can be discerned from human history. It's mostly a dialogue between God and those who want to keep attuned to him/her. There are many differences in the way God is understood, mostly because human beings cannot give up on their own humanity, biases, perceptions, agendas, interests, and so forth. Historical developments are also noted.
Shaky? You bet! That's why I love the nuance of the word "faith" in my language, and that nuance helps me see that living by faith is following a clue. Sounds rather postmodern, although the Bible doesn't claim any authorship of postmodernism and is heavily criticized from postmodern quarters as well.

not the same the sense is You shall not murder

this does not preclude a just war, or capital punishment and has strong relevance to other issue but perhaps not directly addressing some other issues like ethanasia or abortion although still revlevant which may need more considerations, like a tubal pregnancy where both mother and child might be lost or using force in self defence

some of the issues such as punishing witchcraft is relevant to the New but would be in a different form; in the New Testament would be more in the direction of praying for and showing compassion to people in hopes they repent, showing mercy for the lost in hopes they turn to God

Thou shall not kill is talking about murder, and the other references are from the old testament where judgment was swift and carried out by the orders of the high priests. We are under a new covenant in the new testament and God will judge .

You have to realize some of the words of the bible are written by men. The Lord would never say an eye for an eye. You have to pray and ask God to give you the wisdom and understanding.

Before Christ came the kingdom was a natural kingdom but now that chris has arrived on the scene the kingdom is a spiritual kingdom Christ said in John 18:36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
