On Airtran? You're lucky if you can get your laptop open.
I'm pretty sure there's no power onboard, so you'll be on battery. And as for internet connection, very few carriers have implemented that yet (none in the US) because the cost is wicked high and a huge % of passengers would have to subscribe to that high per minute cost to even breakeven.
With carriers like AA, at least you usually get the power jack for a power dealie like in your car. For entertainment, you'll probably have to pop in a dvd or play a game w/o internet.

You sure can. On take off and landing it must be shut off and secured.
Some electronic devices give out radio frequencies which may interfere with the aircraft.
Also it is so in case of emergency it does not go flying into the back of someone's head.
And contrary to opinion Boeing is looking into Internet connections on some aircraft.
There is a satellite phone available that you can purchase, although it is expensive time, that you can use to get Internet connections. They have been available to the small aircraft pilot for a few years now since regular cell phones don't work at altitude.

Some planes let you use the AirPhone in the seatback for internet, but they charge a lot, dollars per minute range.
And many devices not designed as radios can emit radio waves. The clock frequency of modern processors is in the same frequency range as low microwaves, and when those signals surge back and forth across the wires in your gizmo, those wires act as antennas and transmit signals. They transmit BADLY, since they're not designed to do that, but some energy leaks out anyway. THAT is why the airlines make you turn off everything: cell phones, palm pilots, iPods, whatever. They can't test every darn consumer gadget for safety, so they just have us turn 'em all off to be safe.

Yes, you can use your laptop in a plane after it reaches a certain altitude and before it starts the final approach for landing. The flight attendants will let you know when its safe to turn any electronic device on.
As a general rule no equipment which can transmit radio waves can be operated at any time during flight (cellphones, radio transmitters, radio remote controls and, of course, wireless Internet connections). You should switch your wireless connection off before boarding.
Although some airlines will be offering Internet service in the near future, I don't believe Air Tran does it yet.
Happy flying!

Yes, you can use your laptop once the plane is above 10,000 feet. They'll let you know when.
There will be NO internet connection on board at all. A few airlines are offering it in Europe and Asia, but none of the US flag carriers are at present.
You MIGHT be able to use the Airphone for internet, but it's going to cost over $10.00 a minute and is extremely slow.
