If your goal is muscle growth, you should be looking to take in between 1-2 grams of protein for every pound of bodyweight. Whey protein supplements can be used to help you reach those goals.

You want to space out your protein intake over the day. The two critical times that a protein supplement can be the most helpful are first thing in the morning (after sleep, your body has been deprived of nutrition for an extended period) and post workout.

I take it pre and post workout. Basically whey protein isn't any magically supplement... it's just milk / cheese by-product protein. It'll certainly help you reach your nutritional needs in obtaining protein throughout the day.

My suggestions for use:
1) As a snack. Taking it during a meal is sort of overkill, since your meal should consistently have protein in it anyways.
2) Post workout -- this helps your body repair the damage you did the gym.
3) Preworkout -- it's a low-carb option and helps protects your muscles from catabolism.

My only gripe about whey protein is it tends to have cholesterol and if you have a problem with lactose tolerance, it will affect you. It's also pricey too.

Good luck.

take about 20 grams of whey b4 u lift-15 to 30 mins so u dont puke. then within 20 mins after u lift u need another 20-40 grams. u also need to take in some type of fast digesting carbs at those same times double the amount of protein ( white bread, gatorade) to replace the used up glycogen ( carbs stored in your muscles/liver that are used for energy). u need protein in your system while you are breaking down the muscle to get the best growth. why deprive your muscles of protein by waiting to drink your shake? you only have about a 30 mins window after u lift to stay completly anabolic ( muscle building state) then if u dont have the right amount of nutrients your body will break down healthy muscles to get the protein u need. make sure your total daily protein is at least 1 gram per pound of bodyweight and carbs should be double that ( or more if you have a fast metabolism).
