I'm 31, 200 lbs, 5' 10". I run 2 miles every other day (for the last 90 days). My heart rate at the end of a run is 180. I just read something that said I should not exceed my target heart rate (190) by 85% (162). Since 180 is above my 85% threshold, am I hurting myself? Thank you.

You are hurting yourself, and not just your heart. As human beings we were not designed for running, except in short fast sprints to escape danger. A rapid walk is much healthier for your body and for your heart. Your knees will last a lifetime of walking, but will degenerate quickly from running. Exceeding your recommended heart rate puts a great strain on the heart muscle causing enlargement, an enlarged heart becomes inefficient over time and you end up in the long run with congestive heart failure.

No. You are young and your heart will likely be able to handle running two miles every other day. the tartget heart rate is just a guideline for certain things. At 31, you are very unlikely to have heart problems. Two mile every other day is not too much. Don't worry as much about the heart rate of 180. It is more important to stay healthy and running is a great way. Unless you were much older, with arthritis, and other things, I think it's wonderful you are getting your exercise. That is ultimately what will keep you and your heart healthy.

And not to be mean, but that heart "strain" stuff just isn't correct. Unless you have a compromised heart already, it just doesn't apply at all to you. If you don't believe me, ask your doctor. I am a physician myself.

Yes, contact a mortician. Coffin prices are cheap this time of year.
