YES, car seats DO expire. Most manufacturers say no more than 6 years past the date of manufacture (printed on the label on the side of your car seat) There is 1 manufacturer that says 5 years. If you have an infant seat from 1999, it needs to be destroyed regardless of it's condition. Cut the belts off, remove the padding, break it if you can (to prevent someone from pulling it from your trash and trying to use it) and dispose of it. Car seats are made of plastic and the constant wear and tear and changing of seasons causes break down in the plastic. This degradation can actually cause small stress fractures which cannot be seen and may result in the seat breaking in a crash and not being able to adequately protect a child. New car seats are now stamped with an actual expiration date (usually located on the bottom of the seat.

Most car seats have a date on the bottom or the side that says do not use after this date. It is 5 year's from the manufactured date. It really doesn't expire but they suggest you don't use it after that date due to the changes and advancements that are made everyday.

My daughter still uses her carseat that we purchased in 1999 (it was a convertible seat). As long as the seat is in good repair, has not been in any accidents, the buckles and belts are intact and in great shape, and there has not been any major changes in the standards, then the seat should be good to go. If any of the safety standards have changed significantly, then you will want to buy a new one. The major new standard that has been added is the LATCH system, however, if you have a car that is older than a 2000, you won't have the required latches to attach it to anyway.

Absolutely expires. They are not to be used for more than one child, say if you have a baby, use the car seat, then even a yr later have another baby, you cannot use that same car seat.. Things change so much in that time, that the manufacturers improve them. So your best bet is to buy a new one approved for baby .. :) hope this helps.

Yes they do. After 6 years they should not be used. I was told this by a police officer at a baby-safety fair. Belts can wear out, and latches can become bent. It is worth it to buy a new one or a used one that is newer than the one that you have.

Yes, they do. The ones from my g/f's son were to old to use with my daughter- they improve so quickly, that they are like one-use or maybe 2 if its back to back...
The authority on this is the local police- they do safety inspections on the car seats, as do major hospitals. (they have a person that does them) So contact one of those to check for sure.
With the "small cost" of them now, its worth it to be as safe as you can with your new little one!

I was told by someone who has one that there is an expiration date. They just want to be sure you have the latest technology.
Just be sure to replace them every two years or so, if you have more than one child.
