when i ask people what nationality they are, instead of saying for example America, the place they were born, they start saying.................'well, i'm 1/4 Irish, 2/3 German, 1/5 Spanish and so on........
this confuses me! are you not a citizen of the country you were born in? hence your nationality is which ever country you were born in.
i was born in Ireland so i'm Irish, plain and simple!
can someone explain how you can be 2/3 or 1/4 of anything, and why do people have to mention it and complicate a really simple answer?

I think that a lot of people are searching for their heritage so get confused when questioned about their origin of birth. They may have heard stories about their families origins and think that their nationality is cool so want to affiliated with that culture. I like yourself agree that people who are born in the US or Canada or Cuba or wherever are that nationality. How much of each other race we each have is actually not important in the long run, as we are all suppose to be brothers and sisters anyway. Just let others explain what they think they are if it makes them happy and realize that you know what certain what nationality you are.

Well in simple, nationality refers to your origin or background.
For example I'm 100% Greek but when asked I say Greek, not American even though I been an American citizen for the last 17 years and served in the military.
America, is comprised of many nationalities. Greeks, Mexicans, etc. So when you ask people what their nationality is, they are giving you the correct answer, the wrong answer would be just to say AMERICAN.
Hope that helps.
For the others that say I'm 1/2 Irish and 1/2 German, well there you go, that is your true nationality, mixed, 50%..

Here in America there are so much diversity that we are all have different nationality's in us.We are proud of all the different heritages that we have. There are people here that are 100% Italian or Irish etc. but for the most part we are all mixed. We say that we are 3/4 of this or 1/2 that so that we can put identity to our personalities as well as our genealogy.

They technically are 2/3 or 1/4 of what ever they say they are their nationality also depends on what they're parents and grandparents, and so on were. I am a little bit Irish, German, American, Japanese, and so on, but your right i would consider myself American more than anything. Sorry You feel that way though

some people are reallly proud of their nationality and heritage......you get to be 2/3 and 1/4 when your parents are the offspring of parents who were from germany and ireland.....you get the genetic traits and bloodline from your parents parents parents....you might not even be 100 percent irish if you trace your family history!!

You must be talking to Americans. We're mutts who tend to be proud of all of the various components of our heritage. This is often confusing to Europeans.
It might help to rephrase your question, as in, "What country are you from?" Less room for confusion that way.

Honestly its just another one of those things that people say that makes them feel like they are unique from everyone else. makes them feel like "hmmm, if i say this, maybe i'll have their attention, or have the upper hand in the conversation.." Poeple are competitive by nature and must always be superior in every aspect of life..
Girls always have to have the best clothing
guys always have to like the best sports teams
Kids always have to have the most digusting worm in the yard
its life... you cant pass it by..

If you are asking Americans, then we look to our family heritage beyond our citizenship. That is why you get that answer.
