If you know your hardware, try running xorgconfig and setting up a new xorg.conf file. It sounds like the monitor can't handle the resolution it's receiving, and is going into standby to prevent damage to the monitor.

If you don't know your hardware, try running xorgsetup. It will try to autodetect your hardware.
