5 “And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

It's true. I find it disturbing. One of the abuses I see in this area is in the letters that are mailed out asking for a prayer request and money. Or to put it another way send your best donation and include your prayer request. It seems almost like selling prayer.
We pray in our church and the minister ask if there are prayer requests and I don't mind this. I'm not sure it it is scripturaly accurate. And then there are the "prayer warrior" prayer teams that you can phone in a prayer. I'm not sure about that either. I've refused an invitation to a prayer group in someones home three times now. I am not comfortable with that. If it had been an invitation to home fellowship I would have been willing to check it out. I do try to pray at home and alone between me and God much more often. It is a good question. Thank you.

>after I study issues that Paul contributed to the Bible, why does it continuously look to contradict what Jesus reported? probably because you have not spent sufficient time researching what Jesus surely reported and how Paul expounded upon Jesus' coaching from his reliable scholarly historic past. i could recommend a good statement sequence, which include the EXPOSITOR'S BIBLE statement. it truly is digestible by ability of the newbie despite the indisputable fact that the better stepped ahead pupil could also take advantage of the exegetical footnotes and endnotes (end of the sections). despite the indisputable fact that, even with a D.Phil. contained in the sphere (Oxford), i have not the slightest idea of what you locate contradictory contained in the party you stated. Sorry. ("Blatantly contradict"? i do not see it.)

In the book Idioms of the Bible Explained, by Geoge M. Lamsa, who translated the bible from the original Aramaic language spoken in Jesus' time to English, the term closet (or room) simply means your inner heart.

I feel that this means that you need only pray silently to yourself, rather than out loud in public, making a spectacle of yourself by showing off, as if to say, "See what a good Christian I am!"

Matthew 6:5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

There are so many people who claim to be Christian and boast and shout on the street corners swinging their bible in the air , for I have seen it were I live. This is not what God wants us to do.
He speaks of us not boasting about what we have done for the Lord, and bragg about it to others. He wants us just to do for others and keep it to yourself, and not go to a friend or a family member and say to them" I did this for mary today or I gave a homeless man some food today'. If you are doing something for someone, and you are doing it for Jesus, you are not to broad cast it to the world. keep that quiet, because God has already seen what you did. If you are broad casting your good deeds to the world, then you are not doing it for God, but to put the light upon you and glorify yourself and not God. That is what this scrpiture is saying.

All things we do are to be done for the glory of God and not for our own.

1 Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

Philippians 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Oh No!
So when I am alone in my room at night praying, God is waching? Ick!
He knows my secrets?
I am in so much trouble!
I pray so often my hands have chapped (from being clasped so tightly) and he was there?
I hope he doesn't tell anyone else my secrets.

Nowadays, the streetcorner is the internet.

Just look at this board and all of the "christians" who reject Matthew 6:5-6.

I love hypocrisy.
/sarcasm off.

That means, sure go ahead and pray, but do it in secret so that it's less embarassing for my father when he doesn't answer you. Good luck with that.

I go in my room alone, I shut the door, I do not pray

I know what you're attempting to get at. You think it's saying that you shouldn't pray out in the open (keeping your religion to yourself), which is not what it is saying. Try again. God is real. Be blessed.
