If you took a single simple living cell. Placed it in a saline solution to keep it alive. Cut the cell open and removed every part of it. Then very carefully put the cell back together again precisely as it was. Would the cell live after being put back to exactly as it was? If man could build a simple cell from scratch, would it come alive?

No. It would not live. For those of you who think it would, do you believe that Frankenstein was real? This is in the right category because only God can create life!!

Well, "Precisely as it was" is the tricky part here.
Every atom? Every muon? All the energy patterns?
Sure.
However, we don't currently have the technology to do that. Indeed,
at this point we don't even have the technology to record all of that
information.
I think what you're trying to get at here is "isn't there some element
to life that cannot be described?"
And the answer to that right now is quite definitely yes. However,
that doesn't mean it cannot ever be described. Every year, we know
more and more about the chemical reactions within a cell and it is
quite possible that we may be able to construct simple life forms
in a few decades.
If you take that same cell and freeze it for a hundred years - is it alive?
It isn't reproducing, it isn't consuming... it fails to fall into the traditional
definitions of life, but if you thaw it out (at least in some cases), it might
start right up.

That's a good question.
We do not currently have the technology to build a cell from scratch. However, taking apart and reassembling a cell is close to what scientists are now doing with some of the more advanced cloning methods.
It will be interesting to see what we will be able to do as our technology advances.

This is a question for a cellular biologist, not an atheist... It is also a hypothetical question - they dont count when attempting to "disthrone" atheism as my beleif system....
BUt I can tell you of an experiment I read bout where a guy took ordinary dirt and water, placed it in a sealed, vacuumed jar and exposed it to radiation - and magically there appeared amino acids, the building blocks of life. So, yes, spontaneous life can occur in the vaccuum of space...

Scientists already successfully transplant nuclei into other cells, so if it were technically possible the answer is probably "yes". Also, researchers are working on creating life from scratch right now. Watch this space...

If its physically possible, which I'm not sure that it is, that wouldn't be creating life, and definately not from scratch. I can take apart a telephone and put it back together, but I can't make a telephone from silicon and plastic (yet).

whats your point? I can cut someones head of, sewing it back on and connecting every veing and nerve again isnt going to bring them back to life. Acording to your argument anyone that freezes to death should jump up and start dancing when they thaw out. It doesnt quite work like that man. Try getting your biology right before you can come out with any more stupid questions or try out one of my examples on your self to rid us of your arguments.

Yes, be careful what you ascribe as being supernatural, science will make you eat your presumptuous words.
It's already possible to recreate viruses from scratch.

hmm maybe but it might die afterwards. Humans aren't perfect and it might stay alive for like a couple months.
