the reason i ask this is - when i moved to Spain i brought my British TV with me and even though i got a lovely picture , i couldn't get any sound. Does anybody know the reason why?

No. The U.K. and Spain use different variants of the PAL system.

The sound-carrier offset is different so you won't hear U.K. sound on a t.v. receiver sold in Spain, or vice versa.

you can buy a reverse adaptor from say, maplins, to use it over here if its 110 volts... have you checked in the menu to set the volume level.. or mute button... if not, speaker is blown... try headhones.. if they work. its the speaker. good luck
