I have a Great Pyrenees protecting my goats. She is amazing. We got her when she was a puppy and she lives in our pasture with the goats. She does her job naturally and we never had to give her any special training. We have a lot of coyotes where we live and she does an super job keeping them out of the pasture. I used to have to lock my goats in at night to keep them safe but I haven't had to do that for almost 2 years now and we haven't had a problem.

She is also a wonderful family pet. Extremely friendly and gentle, loves the kids, and doesn't eat much considering her huge size. She is the best dog and I would recommend a GP to anyone looking for a guardian dog.

There are protectors that just guard the sheep/goats, and then there are herders that move the sheep/goats from one place to the other.

Collies are herders, so are "Shepherd" breeds, and Heelers. They are all in the "herding" group of the AKC.

Flock guardians are in the working group, and are usually much larger than herding breeds. They also tend to be white or cream colored. The theory is that a predator will not notice them until too late. Some of the breeds are, Great Pyrenees(most popular as pets), Komondor, Kuvasz, Anatolians, Akbash, Caucasian Ovtcharka, and Pyrenean Mastiffs.

Usually a dog that can protect the Goat Herd is Great Pyrenees.

If you are trying to protect your goats from coyotes, then adding some llamas might work better. Dogs can herd goats (with some training), but maybe you don't need that. Llamas have an instinctual antipathy to all canines (coyotes AND dogs), so no training is needed. Dogs can also lose to a pack of coyotes! Llamas don't.

Australian shepherds will watch over sheep or goats, basically any large working breed dog can be trained to guard over live stock. Some just do it better than others. It's basically up to you to know how to train the dog properly. There are allot of books on this subject. Your local library should be able to help you find the books you need on this subject.

Many goat flock owners seem to use the Hungarian herding breeds: Kuvasz, Komondor, Maremma, etc.

I've also seen many Great Pyrs used in our area.

There are many different dogs in the herding group. Border collies, Australian shepherds are a couple of them.

We've used Great Pyrenese for years. They blend into the herd and keep everyone safe.
