In all probability for the exact same reasons that the English, Scots, Welsh, Irish, Germans, Italians, Poles etc, etc, etc have been wandering the earth.

The history of the Jewish people begins with Abraham, and the story of Abraham begins when G-d tells him to leave his homeland, promising Abraham and his descendants a new home in the land of Canaan. That depends on when you mean, intially it was because they were forced into excile after being conquered, I think by the babylonians, later by Persia.
