Because girls are raised to try and fit in and not to be who they are... the media portrays them as sex symbols and advertising portrays them as woman who always have to look beautiful to get to everyones (men's) attention.
If parents took a more active role in their childs self esteem, teaching them how to be real women in society who thin ofr themselves, and not let society tell their young impressionalble girls how to be woman one day, girls wouldn't feel the need to be like everyone else because they have family letting them know they are worth more than looking pretty and trying to fit in.

I think that it's because they want to feel they belong. Doing things their way makes them stand out. But I think that goes also to guys, specially when their on their teens, and later too.
