By maintaining our values does not mean rigidity. Values and culture are best reflected in our character as a human being. Opening up, adopting and absorbing good things from other cultures will enhance our character and personality. Change is the law of the nature. With changing times we need to keep pace but this never means to give up our existing good values. For example, Karma is lesson taught by Lord Krishna which holds equally good in present times. But with modernity, our lifestyles have changed a lot and we are bound to maintain with the change, whether slow or fast; but the principle of Karma is always with our character.

Respecting our elders is in our culture and if we discuss and put forth our point of view in discussions with our elders, say about one's liking about choosing one's life partner, it shall never mean that we have stopped respecting our elders. The changing time may require someone to go for a working spouse whereas the tradition in the family is not for ladies going out for work. Now where is the logic thinking and line of maintaining or not maintaining our values and culture vis-a vis modernity.

We may have scores of arguments for and against on many big or small matters. But we need to be rational and have a sensible space for each of us.

DEFINATELY. India still holds in it all the values. Modernity can only change the outlook of people, not the heart.
indians are valued for their dignity and strength of character. the culture that cultivates tolerance is a found in indian culture.

An indian culture is a very very rare and classic example of integrity in diversity. It is the indian culture that binds so many religion so harmoneously. an hindu celebrates Eid and Christmas with the same zeal as he celebrates Diwali os holi.

Indian culture has a history of thousands of years. still it has managed to survive so superbly. there have been instances when indian culture was affected by external elements like moghuls and british empire. one possible reason is that indian culture has always respected other religions and have taken up good practices and inculcated in itself while it has shunned itself from evil practices over the course of history.

Believe me, i trust with all the faith in my heart that MODERNITY is just a tiny grain. it can only impair vision for a small time. the truth always prevails.

Well. As long as your 'values' include having a caste system that allows a significant percentage of your population to be treated like animals, or at the very least, lesser humans, then you really ought to become more modern.

Your caste system is a disgrace, and I wish the people who made the human rights laws would have the balls to point out the abomination that still exists.

Absolute disgrace, but I doubt you guys will bother doing anything about it because the people who don't have to suffer the injustice are probably quite happy with the arrangement.

It makes me sick.

Don't take India as a monolithic country. There's a plethora of diverse ethnic groups, languages, faiths and worldviews. Out of the major religions, there's a great deal of animosity and deadly violence between Hindus and Muslims. Hindus have also attacked Christian minorities.
Are they keeping their values, or living up to their moral standards by engaging in horrible violence?
Is that an example to be followed by totally different cultures like the ones you find in the West?

Values and Cultures are not constant - they, like everything else, keep on evolving, keep changing.

Who said India is maintaining these? Day by day we are slowly changing. But since Indians has been able to retain these for over 4000 years, they will also take a longer time to change.

What grows slowly, will also come down slowly.

Sure we will see it - in another 4000 years from now! In our next-next-next...........re-incarnations!

Yes we are maintaining our culture and values. Being modern does not mean one is not rooted to ones culture. Our roots are too strong inside our hearts and heads that it cannot be changed easily or be taken over by modernity.

Most of the Hindus I know manage to meld Western culture and modernity very well with their own native values and culture. I admire them. They set us all a good example.

I do believe that most Indians try to maintain their values despite the temptation. It is only the greedy rich and lusty powerful persons who have no qualms about morality, tainting and tarnishing the image of India.
