Yes he was probably gay. There are sonnets written by him that speak of his love for a man.

I saw several listings of Michael Angel affiliated with Gay groups including the Leslie-Lohman Gay Art Foundation and there was a reference to a Michael Angel leading a gay chorus but I am not completly sure that this is the actor Michael Angel
