If you're speaking in tongues, you will obviously sound like a fool. True speaking in tongue is speaking another language, a real language, not gibberish. There is a purpose in speaking in tongue, that is to communicate to people of other languages. Please understand, speaking in tongue is NOT talking gibberish. If you run around talking gibberish, you will most certainly not only sound like an idiot, you'd bascially be showing yourself to be an idiot.

God is logical, and true speaking in tongue is logical, it has a purpose, communication. Talking gibberish has no purpose, no point, it's simply gibberish. Use the common sense God gave you.

For all of you people encouraging this child in this voodoo, knock it off. You know it's wrong. God doesn't want anyone to be leading His children astray and to encourage this nonsense is doing exactly that. The gifts God give us are useful gifts, like healing. Why would he have us talking gibberish? He wouldn't.

I heard somewhere that speaking in tongues is something that should mostly be done in private and not to be boasted about, but I don't have a biblical reference for you. I would suggest praying alone and if it comes to you to start speaking in tongues while you're praying, then go with it. There is still not very much spoken in churches about the spiritual gifts, but I believe they are very real! A good friend of mine is an intercessor, and I have learned a lot from her, including that I apparently have the gift of prophecy, which I am currently trying to understand and study. Here's a reference I just found, hope it helps!

Edit: Okay, I found it, 1 Corinthians 12 talks about spiritual gifts.

When you worship the LORD, even while speaking tongues, DO NOT focus on anyone but the LORD. Offer a SACRIFICE of praise soley to Our Father and do not be ashamed in anyway. That being said, your faith walk does require balance, so you may not feel right in sharing this gift in front of friends. Your unease may be the beginning of wisdom. So, like some others said, speak in tongues during your private prayers or at home. The bible says that speaking in tongues edifies (or builds up) the one who is using the gift. http://www.geocities.com/hankmcintyre/Bible_Tongues.html It helps to strengthen you and your body, so with that knowledge, do it in private. I do it under my breath around my husband because we haven't had a lot of conversation about this. I received the gift one day while I was alone, struggling through something hard and it truly did serve to edify me. The tongues are for the LORD and for your strength. Very few people have the gift of interpretation, so don't be afraid, just be careful, balanced and prayerful. Blessings and Grace Unto You!

I'm surprised at so many different answers. Go to the word of God. Honey, I don't really understand what you mean by saying that when you feel like speaking in tongues. It is as the Spirit gives you utterance (Acts2:4) Furthermore, according to 1Corinthians 14:2-5 says that you are speaking to God and edifying yourself. Read the whole chapter, it's good. Tongues are languages and the bible says that they are for a sign to the unbeliever.
Pray that you may interpret it.

The Apostle Paul claimed to have spoken in tongues more than anyone.

"I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you." (1 Corinthians 14:18)

But, he also says that speaking in tongues doesn't do the herer any good without a translation. 1 Cor 14 The gift that Paul encouraged more is the gift of prophicy, that is being able to tell prople what God says, or being able to make God's words, the Bible, relivant to today.

Here is a study guide on Tongues and Prophesying that I hope you may find useful.

Sweetie, just tallk to God like you would anyone else. If someone told you to speak in toungues, they have mis led you.

2 Timothy 2:16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness

The word speaking in tongues means to speak in a foriegn lanugage. That is what happend at the tower of babbel. God got angry at the people for trying to build a tower into heaven,so he confused their tounges with foriegn languages so they could not understand each other and could not finish the tower.

Just talk to God in the normal way you pray. He loves you so very much.
God bless you

I'm sorry to say but you can't just speak in tongues
when you feel like it, the Holy Ghost gives you the utterance to speak or pray in tongues you just don't use it when you feel like it the bible says that when speak in a unknown tongue you speaketh not unto man butunto God for no man
understandeth him 1 Corinthians:14:2
Plaese read 1 Corinthians chapters 13 & 14
it will help you to understand better but most of all ask God to give you knowledge of the Holy Ghost
and to help you to use wisdom

You don't have to speak in tongues to your friends unless you have a way to interpret it for their benefit. If your friends can't understand you what is the point of even talking to them.God only does things for a good reason and for a purpose. Speaking in tongues for when you talk to God.
Usually you talk to God in secret that you may be rewarded openly.
Read Mathew chapter 6 verse 6. This is just some little tip from a fellow Christian, but if God specifically tells you to speak in tongues to your friends then obey him.

Speaking in tongues in Christ's day was a miracle that happened in the Upper Room when the Holy Spirit came upon the Disciples and they went out and spoke to all in their native tongue. Today, speaking in tongues can destroy a congregation -- if someone speaks in tongues and there is no interrupter, it is of the devil. There must be someone to tell others what you are saying and not just saying something untrue, but truly be filled of the spirit. One does not have to speak in tongues to be saved by Christ -- one must walk by Faith and believe. All scripture tells us is we must go through Christ to come to the Father -- nothing about tongues first and then Christ and the Father...Be careful -- study and study the scriptures deeply -- We will pray for you....

I've always wondered how you know you're speaking in tongues and you're not just babbling. It seems to me that unless you have some sort of external check, or purpose to doing so, I don't think it'll do you any good.
I believe that I have had momentary manifestations of this gift. When I was on a mission to a Spanish speaking community, there were times when my ability to communicate in Spanish far surpassed what I really knew. That, in my opinion, is a valid manifestation of the gift of tongues. If you're running around your neighborhood babbling, I don't see how that does anyone any good, not even God.
