I had braces and teeth out when I was younger, and I am now so glad I did. It is sometimes painful (esp when they are tightened) but well worth it.

I also had a brace to make my mouth wider - that was much more painful, it had a key which had to be turned each night to expand it.

Pain is difficult to measure, but I didn't find braces too unbearable.

Well I had braces when I was 12 for two years (I'm 19 now) i had to get two "baby" teeth pulled out so that the braces would fit right. That part didnt hurt to much the pain only lasted a few days then it was over. When I actually got the braces on it was really sore and the insides of my cheeks got cut alittle bit from all the wires and stuff.. but after a few weeks it was fine and I didnt even notice I had them anymore! I also had to wear head gear because I had an overbite but thats a whole different story! lol... but dont let the pain and discomfort make you change your mind about getting them tho.. in the long run you will really really like it.... I could never imageine haveing bad crooked teeth now!!!!

It hurts in the beginning and then again when you have to get them tightened. As a teenager (at 13) I had the most common braces with the brackets and all and yes, I had a tooth pulled. They only pull a tooth if your mouth is too crowded. As an adult (now 28) I use the Invisalign (my teeth didn't stay straight because I didn't maintain with the retainer and then my wisdom teeth messed them back up) and I sooo wish they had that available when I was a kid. Much more comfortable. Beauty hurts honey. That's a fact

It really doesn't hurt. It only tightens your teeth. The braces pull your teeth closer together. My son got braces on and I was there throughout the whole process. It never hurt him. The rubber bands they put on your braces only feels like it's tightening your teeth. Your mouth might be a little sore for a day or two but other than that, you will be just fine. And just think, once those braces come off, you will have a beautiful smile. Yes, sometimes they have to pull a tooth or two depends on where the tooth is located and if it will cause a problem to get the braces on. Good luck

What you were told is completely true. But it's completely worth it. I am in braces right this very moment, and when I got mine on, I didn't have to have any teeth removed. However, both my sisters did when they got theirs on, so I assume it's very commonplace. When you get your braces on, I'm not going to lie- The pain is going to drive you insane. You won't be able to eat solids, or really chew for at least a week. Even when you can no longer feel a constant throbbing, it will hurt to bite into things for about a week after that. When you get a new wire and such, your teeth will hurt again. However, the pain will not be as bad as when you first get them on, and should go away sooner.

Braces sound like hell, and to be honest, they kind of are. But they are so worth it, because in the end, you have a beautiful smile you can be proud of- And teeth are something people notice a lot more as you get older. In the long run, you'll be happier you dealt with the braces.

The only time it is uncomfortable getting the braces, is when you have to have your mouth open so long. Other than that, when the orthodontist tightens them, it can be sore but I would say the pain is very very minimal.

They should only pull teeth when necessary and some orthodontists won't put braces on without having the proper amount of room needed. So a tooth getting pulled could be needed. Go in for a consultation and ask all of these questions, they will you their opinion. Probably better than any of us out here.

Everyone's teeth are different and they don't always pull your tooth. If they do, the only part about it that hurts are the shots of novocaine to numb your mouth. Once your mouth is numb, there isn't a thing you'll feel.

As for the braces, they don't hurt. Your teeth will feel very snug as they are straightening out because the braces will put them in line. I used to love to get my braces tightened because the snugness feels really good.

Just remember, you will have so much more self-confidence with your teeth straight. It's truly something to look forward to. There's nothing more dazzling about a person than a beautiful smile.

It hardly hurts at all. :) Most of the first precedure is just tedious waiting for glue to dry, etc. And if you have to have a tooth pulled, the orthodontist willl let you know beforehand.

The only part that does hurt is the putting in and tightening of wires. That can be really painful, but can easily be resolved by eating only soft foods (bananas, applesauce, ice cream...) for a while. Of course, sometimes the skin in mouth is rubbed raw by the braces, but the body automatically creates a callus there, preventing the problem in the future.

Ironically, I've heard that it hurts more to get braces off than to get them on. :) And just think of what wonderful looking teeth you'll have afterwards!

You'll immediately feel the pain after you get your braces on because because of the following factors: 1) the metal squares will start rubbing your inner mouth and you'll probably get canker sores 2) the braces will start to move your teeth -- and your teeth will feel super sensitive. Sorry to say the first few days will be the most painful. You'll eat a lot of soft foods for a bit, but within a week or so you'll be accustomed to it. Once they "tighten" it again the teeth sensitivity will be back.

If your mouth is crowded with teeth, your orthodontist will probably remove a few teeth FIRST.

Don't worry...the pain is worth it and it's just a short-term inconvenience. Long term you'll have a great smile.

It doesn't hurt to have the braces put on but it will leave your teeth sore for sometime right after it is put on and after they are tightened. If they pull out teeth, they will have to give you anestetics. If they use a needle to give you the anestetics, let me just say that that was the most pain I ever felt in the dental office when they stick the needle into the gum or your inner cheek. When they pull the tooth out, it isn't as bad as having the needle inserted into your gums. If there is enough anestetics, you will feel some pressure but there is almost no pain at all. Eating is a pain after the first days. biting down on your teeth will cause some pain but you will either get use to it or eat soft food for a while. The soreness leaves after a week or so. Get use to it. You'll have them for some time.

I had braces for 4 years. It didn't really hurt getting them put on, just a little uncomfortable holding your mouth open that long. Each month I had to get them tightened, that made my mouth a little sore at first but after the first couple of months, it didn't hurt at all. As for pulling teeth, that depends on your mouth, mine was too small for all my teeth and had to get 4 pulled. That really doesn't bother me though.

When you first get the braces on and when they are tightened, you will probably have to stay on a soft diet for a day or 2, I did. Now when I got them that was a long time ago. I was in 7th grade and I am now 34, things may have changed, but I don't think that much. It is worth it to have nice looking teeth.

Good Luck!
