I made a call to my friend at the MS Chapter Society and she had stated that MS cannot cause heart troubles, but thought you might have other health issues, but MS cannot cause heart problems. You might want to check your family history to see if anyone on either side of your parent's family for heart problems. I have MS as well and I had asked my doctor that same question. Although MS cannot cause any health problems other than the Mylen attacking the nerve system, but it doesn't stop other illnesses from happening. Please contact your neurologist and ask that question. My best to you.

Hey - I'm sorry you're worried about this! I'm 19 too and just spent a few months freaking out about MS while I waited to get tested. So, I think I can help you here... Okay, what I learned from my doctors! First, cognitive problems rarely develop at onset - usually after many years. Also, MS symptoms don't last a few seconds, or minutes, or hours even... things like tingling and numbness (that could be signs of developing MS) last for weeks of months typically, if they're caused by the disease. The fatigue and trouble in a hot shower ARE symptoms of MS - but, they're also symptoms of a TON of other things, too. I freaked out over those symptoms, but my MRIs were clean - so I hope you are too! Also, check your stomach - if it's as ticklish as it always was, then that's a pretty good sign it's not MS. Like, if you can get a reflex reaction from flicking the skin on your stomach, you're good to go. Apparently sensation there is one of the first things that people lose with MS, almost always. To know for sure, though, you'd need an MRI - otherwise it's a really tricky and unsure diagnosis. Those things cost over a thousand, though, so you'd definitely need insurance for that. Well, good luck! I'm sorry you're worrying, and having these symptoms :( I hope you find something that works!

RE:
Can multiple sclerosis cause heart problems?
I have MS, and I know pretty much all there is to know about it. But recently, my heart has been beating funny. Went to doc, said it was a re-polarization problem. Sinus arythmia and brachardia (I think that's what she said). Yet, I talked to another person with MS, and she said that it can...

I've never heard of MS causing heart problems, myself.
However in theory, the vagus nerve (cranial nerve 10) influences heart rate and if there is interruption of the myelination of this nerve, possibly it could explain abnormal heart beats.
I'm not sure how it would STIMULATE the nerve so as to cause slow heart beat (bradycardia), but there you have it.
NB. sinus arrhythmia is not actually a problem. It is a normal variation in heart rate which is related to breathing and the volume of blood in the lungs. It occurs frequently in the normal population.

I have had MS since 2000 and have been on just about everything there is to offer, I was on Novantrone for just about a year and anyone who has been on it knows they test your heart for any side affects. I was doing just fine until they said that being on it had caused some heart irregularities and I was taken off for my safety by the Neurologist. Years later after being on numerous courses of steroids, 2008 had a round of 5 days which I usually only have 3 but the new doctor has a degree who am I to object. Started having some chest pains and serious pulse action, around that time the doctor called after the 5th day and said you need to check in with your primary care doctor your Blood sugar A1C is 9.0+ which would explain why I was dragging myself around NO energy at all. Went to doctor blood sugar close to 600 and was checked into the hospital that day, good thing I was because I went into A-Fib that night my pulse shooting between 160-190. So over the many years of steroid treatments that caused me to become Insulin Resistant and have Type ll Diabetes. I gave this background because it didn t stop there I was on medication for my heart and things got better so Cardiologist took me off until recently my pulse was doing the same thing and thank God it did it when I was at my Cardiology appointment. He put me on Digoxin 3 pills right away and one a day since and I will be going in to have a
Cardiogram tomorrow to check to see IF I have Cardiomyapathy, if not treated I could have a stroke or go into heart failure. So in all my research I have not heard of MS causing problems with your heart but tracing what I ve been through you can see that the medication we are on for MS could cause side affects that could possibly lead to heart problems. Look up Novantrone and the warnings for it does say to the affect that it could cause heart irregularities, just as Tysabri you have to be tested for the JC Virus because that could cause the rare brain infection involving Leukemia. I tested Positive so I had to be taken off of Tysabri also. IF you are not aware of Tysabri s relationship with the JC Virus check this out.

Well, are you 100% sure you have MS and not APS. Many MS patients are wrongly diagnosed and really have APS. And APS can cause heart problems.
If they are 100% sure it is MS, then chances are your heart issue is a stand alone issue.
Good Luck!

Brian: Excellent question. Simple answer: perhaps!!
As someone who has been managing MS for over 45 years, I continue to be amazed about what symptoms MS DOES cover!!! For example: I'd been having problems swollowing, and having stuff go into my lungs instead of my stomach. I am a 'fanatical" documentor of symptoms and their impairment on my normal daily activities, so when i went in to see my dr, he sent me to see a speach therapist. It turns out that MS can impact INTERNAL MUSCLES just like external ones; and, I had what is called "mild dysphasia" - where my throat, diaphram, and the little "thing" that covers either the stomach or the lungs - whichever is needed - to assist breathing or swollowing - was becoming numb. So, I had to learn how to manage these symptoms.
So, does MS impact your heart? Perhaps? To best way to help your doctor help you is to document -IN SPECIFIC DETAIL - your symptoms, and how they impact you. Then your doctor can best assist you manage those symptoms.
