The first sign a species is becoming sentient is when they have evolved
to the point where they can abstract enough to invent a god. The first sign a species is achieving sentient maturity is when they get rid of their gods

I don't want to sound overly religious here, but I doubt that will ever be fully resolved. How do we know when a machine becomes sentient when all its actions are preprogrammed? Even if we can teach a computer to "learn", it will simply do so along the parameters of what the programmers set up as a learning pattern. I do think it's an interesting question though. Maybe I'm wrong.

For intelligence to be sentient it must be sincere - or so my belief is. I think perhaps that our preoccupation with computers achieving sentient thought is more an indicator that our own, human, intelligence is becoming more and more artificial, and therefore insincere. But there are many forms of intelligence. I think that for thought to be truly sentient, and organic, it must posess that almost metaphysical trait: intuition -- that is my intuitive answer.
Good question by the way.

Such things like opening a door. Sounds odd but i studied artificial intelligence and for us opening a door is a simple action, but a machine doesn't understand what a door handle is, then how to grip it, then how to open it, then how to open the door.
Its basic knowledge we have gained from life experience when machines can only carry out actions based on checking a database of possible actions they can do.

as long as someone is teaching .. a machine will always be able to learn
i think the main differences between us and artificial intelligence is the ability to feel
when you see a machine cry then you know the line has been crossed ( in saying that i think there are many artifial life forms posing as humas lol so unfeeling )

Any understanding at all would be sufficient. The question is: how do you know if it is truly understanding or merely simulating understanding?

If this was an attempt at an intelectual question, it did not work.
