Just took child to dentist. They said there was an over active build up of orange plack called orange stain. What causes this and how can you make it go away or lessen the amount of plack that builds up?

this child is almost 13 and has never had a cavity. Brushes well, but usually only once a day.

Take the child to the store and let them pick out a fun toothpaste and toothbrush - manual only please no spinbrushes. This will get the child excited about brushing. Convince the little one to brush after every meal (at least the ones at home) as well as at wake-up and before bed. You will probably have to help. Little kids have a tendency to pick one side of their mouth to brush well, and they ignore the rest of their teeth.

Also, watch the diet. If your child eats lots of sugary sweets, drinks kool-aid and sodas (even diet soda), and doesn't get enough milk and vitamin rich veggies the teeth and gums will not produce enough of their own protection.

Lastly, ask the dentist. Some people have teeth that are more succeptible to plaque, stains, and cavities. Your dentist or hygenist will be able to tell you if it was caused by biology, diet, or brushing habits.

Have the dentist clean it off, then get the kid a SonicCare toothbrush. Make certain he uses it properly twice a day. Have him floss too. Flossing is so important! A good tartar control mouthwash will help too. Much of this crap builds up at night when we sleep, so have him floss, brush and rinse before bed. Just brushing in the morning should be fine. If he does this daily, the problem should resolve itself. Some people have saliva that causes extra plaque, so if the above does not resolve it, he may need to brush mid-day to help. A SonicCare will more than pay for itself in good oral heath down the road!

Firstly I would like to congratulate you as a parent for taking the time to be concerned about this.

It all comes back to brushing. If your child is 8 or under then you need to start brushing for them again (after they have had a go) if they are over 8 then you need to be supervising what they are doing. Orange stain can indicate that you child is at a higher risk of getting decay so it is really important to get the brushing happening efficiently.

Dear frustrated parent,

A good cleaning would help. Give your child a cleaning every six month. You should start brushing your child's teeth and floss if you can because he/she is too young to brush his/her own teeth properly (45 degree angle toward gum line very gently-dont brush to hard it will damage the gum- at least 10 times on 1 area).

Plaque: Colonization of bacteria, causing cavity.

Good luck and take care!
