About 5 moths ago I started craving ice. At first, it would be one 22 oz cup full a day, usually with water or a Coke and I would just crunch away at what ever ice was remaining in the glass. But now, on my way to work I stop and buy a 32oz cup of ice, at lunch I buy a 32oz cup full and then on my way home from work in the evenings, I purposely go to the convinace store to buy four or five 22oz cups of ice. I usually consume one before getting home and the others I put in the freezer and munch on through the night. My first concern, of course, would be my teeth with all the crunching. In most cases I get crushed ice, but sometimes, like today, I am stuck with cubes. Secondly, I heard that craving ice could mean an iron deficency. I currently do not have health insurance, so a Dr's visit is out for now, so I was just wondering if anyone else has simular cravings and has been able to get to the bottom of them. Thanks!

Eating ice is bad for your teeth. My dentist told me to stop so I did. I haven't heard about it being a sign of iron deficiency but if that is the case, find out and if you are iron deficient, it's very important to eat more iron-rich foods or take supplements. As far as getting checked, if you are willing to donate blood, they check your iron before you can donate. If it's too low, you can't donate. If it's not, you can donate. You'd be helping others who need blood and answering your own question at the same time.

Okay, ice is just water, so too much?? I don't think so, but you can flood your system by drinking too much water.

You can weaken, or chip teeth if you keep it up. When I was pregnant, I had a craving for ice, chewed or just sucked on. It did go away...

As for iron take a multi vitamin & eat lots of greens & iron rich foods. You wil know soon enough.

You can buy iron suplements from a chemist, which should get your iron levels up if you are anemic. If you often feel tired this is a sign of anemia, but the only way to know for sure is to have a blood test. You could eat iron rich foods such as spinach, liver and rare steak.

i worked at a dental office and we had cracked teeth all the time from this ! If you think a dr visit is expensive try root canal, then a crown!!! 1000.00 ish. if you absolutely, MUST (maybe it is the crunch you crave, not the ice itself??) try the "soft ice" at Sonic..

Yes, it is okey as long as your mouth can stand on the cold, Because it can make your whole mouth numb. I think there nothing wrong with that, it is similar with water and water is good for the body.
