no but seriously..... My Dog just had pups about 5 weeks ago and stopped feeding them a week ago. She is extra swollen since she stopped feeding them but is also practically dragging her "teets" on the ground (of course she is a basset hound so they dont have far to go) I was just wondering if and when she will go back to normal.... Not a huge concern... I will love her either way even if she is saggy (god knows it happens to all of us) just curious! =)

PS: I am getting her fixed once the pups are in their new homes... so please no lectures about "the pet population" thanks

If it's only the one litter, they usually go back to normal, especially if she is spayed soon afterwards.

The same thing happens with goats. Of course, they're always making milk, but when they're pregnant or still have newborns, the milk pouch gets full so the kid has enought to eat. It sort of stretches the milk pouch (sorry, I forget the real term for milk pouch). When the puppies are gone, she should recover very quickly. My grandmother raises dogs as a living and once the pups are weaned or sold, the dogs go back to normal in usually 4 days to 2 weeks depending on how many pups she had.

When dogs start to dry up after feeding pups sometimes they can get what is called mastitis, if she feels warm to the touch, and hard you have a problem. She will need to have treatment. You could start by putting ice on her for 20 minutes, and then heat for 20 minutes, and do this 4-5 times a day. Glad to hear that you are being a responsible owner and getting her fixed. Good luck

Basset hound?? I saw on a show, all basset hounds that have puppies will have their tummies drag. Take a small shirt, tanktop or go to "petsmarts" and find a dog shirt, and put it on your basset hound, it will make walking more comfortable for your basset, because the cloth will rub against the ground, preventing wounds from cement, carpet burns, etc.

hope that helps!!!

Some female teats do shrink back to normal, but some don't. You said you would love her either way, so don't worry about it. Had 2 Rotties...one shrank, the other did not....It can take 2-4 weeks for them to shrink...sometimes longer...sometimes shorter.

Congrats on your decision to spay! This will make her a healthier dog in the long run!

yes, and then you can put her on fear factor and really make some bucks!!! Seriously, my experience is that things pretty much go back to normal after the little ones are weened.
