I've always wondered this. all my life I grew up hearing this from my grandmother. so do you think that it's possible. or is it just something she heard when she was a child or something. my mom believes this too. cats are very smart animals anyways. I have a greyish brown male tabby kitten. what do ya'll think?

I hate to tell anyone their grandmother was "misinformed" but there is no known connection between fur pattern and intelligence in cats.
The truth is cat's intelligence is not so much studied because we don't need to know much about it. Dog intelligence we need to know about because we use dogs for search and rescue and drug sniffing. Cats may sniff weed but may decline to "narc". They are all little anarchists.
The truth is, with no hard facts on file, I guess you may believe what you like

I think that all animals are smart but some are smarter than others. I think that your grandmother had a preference for tabby cats and this might be why she said they were smarter. Every cat that I have had or come to meet has been smart. It's a lot like personality...it varies from cat to cat (and person to person).

I don't know that they are any smarter than any other cat...on the other hand, there are a lot of tabby cats out there, so they must have good survival skills (or more than 9 lives)!

I think alot of grandmothers say funny things that are not true, but looked at from a common sensical point of view, it is possible.
I bet your cat is smart, but not because of its fur.

Well, there are many stray and ferral cats that are tabbies and since they've had to make it on their own, perhaps they are percieved as 'smarter'.
I dunno. It's probably just an old wives tale. Here's a brief article.
