It used to be a pretty solid three months: June, July and August. Over the last decade or so that time has decreased to about 2 1/2 months in order to increase standards.
Many people, including me, think that we need to do away with that long break and work towards a more year-round school schedule with several two or three week breaks throughout.

Yes, summer vacation for American schoolchildren usually runs from late May or early June until around late August.

Although, now in some states, certain schools have went to year round schooling and the children go to school for 6 weeks and are out for 2.

I think about this all the time. I'm from Australia, and while I do like it here, I love the US as well. I'm always considering where I'm going to live when I'm older - areas of Australia, schools I would and wouldn't send my future kids to, and the like. I'm a city girl, but I love the country. Excuse the white girl-ness, but I love farms, just not cleaning the animals. So maybe I could have like a produce farm. Like tomatoes and grapes and stuff. I love the idea of raising kids on a farm, but I love the city, and I'd need to be in the city for the line of work I'm pursuing. I have friends who go to boarding school in the country, which I think is a great idea, but I don't love all the sneaking around that goes on at boarding school - sneaking out to parties etc. Although, there are only two boarding schools in the area, and the kids either go to those schools, or boarding schools in the city. I don't think I've actually answered your questions, but I'd love to have my kids go to schools in the city, and then perhaps boarding school in the country. I also love the idea of living in Los Angeles, New York or Atlanta, Georgia. Atlanta's a bit random, I know. But I like it there :)

Some get the three month (give or take a week) break but others are on a year-round schedule and so do not get a three month break. Depends on the school district for public school or on the school policy for private school.

Most schools yes. Some counties give strange rules, but generally yes, we do have 3 months of summer holiday and one week for winter, one for spring, and four days for thanksgiving. Plus we get off for presidents day and MLK's birthday, Memorial day, and Columbus day.
