Adrianne, I could not have said it better myself! You are so right. I urge those of you who are concerned about the plight of animals worldwide to join PETA. It isn't the kind of organization that you read about. As a member of PETA, I write letters to government officials, boycott companies who test with animals, I don't purchase any animal products and of course I am a vegan. I believe that in order to stop the abuse worldwide, each of us must give as much support as we can.
If half the world were vegan, we would be putting food into the mouths of all of the hungry children and adults in the entire world. Farming livestock uses the bulk of the world's resources that could be used to plant vegetation and grain to feed the entire world.
So, take a look at PETA. When I joined and became a vegan, my health improved drastically and I felt like I was actually doing something more than just empty complaining.
Good luck,
Crystal

China has a reputation for taking the easy route out of political problems. Rather than putting into practice dog licensing laws, required vaccinations, and leash laws, the government would rather just kill the animals. To change the laws would take time and money the average Chinese just don't have (the politicians do, but they would rather buy nice things than use that money on social programs). Not to mention the manpower required to enforce these laws. While many of the people live in cities, much of the vast rural areas still live as they did years ago and it would be difficult to get the word out to these people about new dog laws.

I am definitely appalled by the things that have been going on around the world. Take the Israel and Lebanon war for instance. Many innocent by standers were killed because of some disagreement Israel and Lebanon had. The dog slaughter in China is too cruel. I wonder if there's an SPCA in China. If there's going to be a new protest against this, i'll probably be the one leading it.

"China does not have any protective or animal welfare laws so a lot of the people are going crazy with torturing animals."
1. They get paid for it and many need the money. No one's "going crazy", they're just following their government's orders by killing any dog which is not government issued, trained, and (highly likely) to have been vaccinated against rabies.
2. They didn't just decide to do it willy-nilly. Three people died from rabies, including a four-year-old girl and this is the government's way of trying to protect its people, albeit poorly. 200,000 people suffered dog bites, and who's to say what dog has rabies and what dog doesn't? They're trying to protect their people.
3. Dogs will always be around, hun, and it's not as if they killed every single dog in all of China. As the Y!News article said, "Experts have tied the rise in part to an increase in dog ownership, particularly in rural areas where about 70 percent of households keep dogs. Only about 3 percent of Chinese dogs are vaccinated against rabies, according to the center. Access to appropriate treatment is highly limited, especially in the countryside."

Friend, as evidenced by the range of answers to your query, you see how some are moved by any senseless act of cruelty to an animal and some are not. I agree with you and the others who expressed outrage about animal cruelty. Unfortunately, China does have a food shortage problem and too many people to support. I haven't heard about any dog slaughter over there, but in view of their constant starvation problems, I'm not surprised...just saddened. A people are judged by how they treat their defenseless ones, including animals.

It sickens me, but there is hope. In the bible, it talks about a time when man and beast will live together in harmony!
Isiah 11:6 And the wolf will actually reside for a while with the male lamb, and with the kid the leopard itself will lie down, and the calf and the maned young lion and the well-fed animal all together; and a mere little boy will be leader over them. 7 And the cow and the bear themselves will feed; together their young ones will lie down. And even the lion will eat straw just like the bull. 8 And the sucking child will certainly play upon the hole of the cobra; and upon the light aperture of a poisonous snake will a weaned child actually put his own hand. 9 They will not do any harm or cause any ruin in all my holy mountain; because the earth will certainly be filled with the knowledge of Jehovah as the waters are covering the very sea.

dogs and cats are slaughtered here in massive numbers too... because we dont do enough to make sure people spay and neuter...
I know shelters across the US that euthanize HUNDREDS of cats, kittens, puppies, dogs a day - 5 days a week - simply because there are too many born and not enough homes
China is having a bigger problem because spaying and neutering isnt as widely availble but dont think we are not a cruel nation either.. ever looked inside a chicken egg battery?? terrible
ever looked at a puppy mill?? terrible and yet people are still STUPID enough to buy pups from pet stores...
we have laws here - but trust me - they are broken every day...
ever asked yourself what happens to all those "FREE TO GOOD HOME KITTENS" cause I am telling you right now NO GOOD HOME would EVER get a free kitten - they would go to the shelter and adopt

Dog slaughter in China? That just means egg rolls will be on sale at grocery stores for a few weeks. "I sell you dozen egg roll for tree dalla, tree dolla...egg roll make you full all day long...tree dalla...good deal."
The suggestion that you join the Peace Corps may not be such a bad idea. Or, you could join PETA and protest on your street corner. You know, hold up signs of mutilated dogs. When you're done, go hug a tree.
If there is going to be any change in China concerning animal cruelty, then that change will have to come from within China. Well, unless someone can convince Bush to invade China to liberate all the dogs. But then a bunch of ugly Chinese women will invade America!!
Lighten up and enjoy what we have here. Life's too short to worry about stuff we have no control over!!
Disclaimer: No harm was done to any dogs, cats, lizards, PETA supporters or Chinese women in the writing of this response.

You are talking about a society that doesn't care about humans, let alone animals. They take their female children and drown them, because they are only allowed one child and most want a boy. They think of dogs as an evening entree, not a pet. They think they are so civilized but in fact they are no better then a 3rd world country.
