Eventhough the great Rocky Marciano retired undefeated, and, Iron Mike Tyson was a human terror/ KO artist early in his career, and, Jack Johnson was and is a legendary African American who looked at the world and took it on, white, black, or, otherwise--all the while dominating so called great fighters of his time, and, refusing to bow down to the corrupt laws of his time, only 2 names really come to mind win I think of "the greatest". One is Sugar Ray Robinson, the other is the answer to your question,Muhammad Ali. Since you asked for one boxer, I am going to going with MUHAMMAD Ali because of his mastery of the "sweet science" that is boxing, the sport of kings. If you really look at all of the names you are going to hear/ read regarding who may,or, may not be the greatest heavyweight ever, what you will see is Ali. I MEAN look closely at how Ali could intimidate an opponent, a la Mike Tyson, show incredible stamina and heart, a la Holyfield, show tremendous and constant punching power, a la Rocky, show unbelievable resolve and dedication, a la Holyfield, who time and time again regained the championship, show the rare ability to perfect speed and power, a la Joe Louis, display unbelievable hand and foot speed, a la Sugar Ray Robinson. Ali beat anyone, and, everyone who came calling. Those who wouldn't come forced Ali to go to them. Of course, Ali went to the UK, Japn, Africa, and, the Philiipines, but, he entertained millions of fans in the USA every chance he got. He beat the likes of Frazier, Foreman, Liston, Moore, Norton, Spinks, Terrell, Foster, Mathis, Quarry, Williams, Ellis, Lyle, Patterson, and, Shavers. With a forced lay-off/ expulsion from the sport for not making himself available for military service by declining induction. No problem, Ali allows time to go by, and three years later goes right back to work, and, proves all of the doubters wrong. Ali wasted no time in going back to work--in going to get what he knew No man could keep from him. This became Ali's legacy. Ali endured ointment in his eyes, and, even a broken jaw during the course of fights, on his way to victories. For every setback Ali would face up until his leaving the fight game, he would bounce back--and prove that he was in fact, the greatest. His speed, his knowledge, his power, his finesse, his grace, his athleticism, and, his 80inch reach proved to be too much for oh so many fighters. Forget all of the accolades from Ring magazine, like Fighter of the year, which he has been named more than any other fighter to date. Forget the fact that GQ, BBC, and, Sports Illustrated all agreed and named Mr. Ali the Athlete of the Century. Like I mentioned earlier, when you look at all of the finer qualities of the names you receive just roll 'em up, and, you get Muhammad Ali. In 61 pro fights Ali only lost 5 times. He was also the first heavyweight champ to regain the championship 3 times. Ali......THE GREATEST ever!
