Absolutely. The original idea was to separate church and state. Since churches insist on being in the middle of every political arena and dictating their idea of morality to everyone else, churches don't deserve a tax-exempt status. They should be taxed heavily, and their government perks trimmed way down.

When churches behave like businesses, they should be taxed like businesses.
When churches distribute the money the way Jesus said to... with a focus on the poor, then no.
When operating expenses are a larger portion of the budget than helping the poor, they should be taxed.
If they aren't doing what Jesus said for them to do, then it is just a business... no different than the "country club" down the street. Just because the business is denominationally specific doesn't mean that it isn't a business.

Yes, many churches operate as a business, why not treat them as such? It may help end the tax deficit, and no one will be hurt.

Tax them depending on individuals income so that the rich will pay more and the poor will pay less. Or even you can exempt the poor ones and charge the rich ones more. Many rich will run away....

Do you want the state's wants to make money out of people's belief? Atleast spare the poor people whose only hope is their belief, why do you want to put mud in their pots?
