i just got a kitten, and he has ear mites, the shelter gave me meds to him, but he wont sit long enough to let me clean his ears before i put the drops in, will it work without cleaning his ears? the bottle says give him 3-5 drops a day...does that mean once a day, or twice?

You might check into this all purpose parasite killer called Revolution. It kills everything in and on a cat with one application. On the back between the shoulder blades. I swear. If I hadn't seen it on my own Lucy C. Tabby I never would have believed it.
Call vet and ask about it.
Cat mites will not live in the human ear. I read in a cat magazine once that a vet who was curious took a swab of stuff from an infected cat (grossness alert here) and stuck the stuff in his own ear to see what would happen. Nothing. I guess they all crawled out in search of a cat. What some guys will do for science.

Get an old towel. Wrap the kit in it very snugly. You will know it is snug enough if he cannot get his legs free of the towel (just be sure not to choke him, and get it high enough on his neck that he cannot put his paws out the opening). Talk to him softly while you are doing this, it will upset him at first. A lot of love and scratching on the head helps. Now, sit down and put him in your lap and do the treatment. Don't forget when you are through to give him some extra love before you put him down. Oh, it would be good to do the treatments in the laundry room because he WILL shake his head like crazy when you are done. If you clean the ears, be certain to go no deeper into his ear canal than you can see; otherwise, you might do some damage. You don't want that. The ear mite medicine should be used only once a day. It is highly toxic, don't leave it where it can get into any food or water. Good luck with your kit. If you give him lots of lap time, you will have a very loving little buddy (good foot warmer at night in the winter time, too). :)

All the homemade remedies that were suggested before my post will work. BUT they will only kill the mites that are currently in the ears. All the other mites that are on the body will continue to migrate to the ears. Even tho they are called ear mites they are all over kitty's body and choose the ears because it is the easier way to suck the blood that they need to survive. Ivomectin is the best way. A small injection and they are ALL gone. If you choose the home remedy plan on doing this routine for several weeks. Ear mites are crusty..... that is the dried blood that you are seeing not the mites. Those are microscopic. Make absolutely sure that the substance in the ear is crusty. If it is oily that is oil from the ear and dirt form scratching. Oils are the worst to use if that is the case. Why? because if it is oily then adding more oil is not good because that is a possible yeast infection. Yeast infections need something like miconozole to clear up.

Asking the vet is always best, but it sounds like once a day. My cat was from a shelter and had ear mites. The way we cleaned/administered drops was what we call the "Thomas Hold" after my other cat who would always back out of your legs if you tried to give him medicine. Pick up the cat and kneel on the floor (make sure medicine is in reach!). Place him between your thighs, and cross your ankles behind you so they can't back out. Do not sit on the cat, but GENTLY squeeze your thighs so the cat can't escape. Now you have your hands free to hold the cat's head while you clean their ears and give the drops. Hope your cat gets better soon!

give the ear drops 3 drops twice a day

you DONT clean the ears before hand as an untrained person could push the stuff further down the ear cannal
I worked for many years in a shelter and YES it works without a need to clean the ears.. you may need to bathe him when its all over because some of the medications are oily so afew days after his last drops

Means once a day. Put cat in pillow case with head sticking out, hold firm and apply drops to each ear.

Usually that means once a day... hold him down and drop in 3-5 drops.. You should get someone to help you. I had a dog the same way.. they do not like it but I had someone to help me hold the dog's head while I administered the drops.

3-5 means in total it should have 3-5 drops in each ear. If you can't keep him down long enough then you should have someone who lives in your house or nearby come over and they can help you keep him down. If that doesn't work ask the vet what he/she suggests.
Good Luck!
