Each area within the world has its own specific region of dvd. Europe is region 2, USA is region 1, Asia etc all have different region codes. It basically means that unless you have a corresponding dvd player it will not play. There are however, ways around this. You can get a thing called dvd region x for the PS2 and some dvd players which means that you can play any region dvd on your player. Hope this helps you out.

Hi...certain areas of world are split into regions ie USA region 1 and europe region 2. This is so DVD's can only be played on players within there own area and DVD's are not sold to other countries evading taxes etc. I think there is an adapter you can get that will allow playing of multi region DVD's or buy a more expensive player to watch DVD's bought worldwide.

Each DVD disk is encoded with a region number - This is the region where it is purchased and hnece the region it can be played in.

In a similar way each DVD player is also encoded with a region which is the region where it was bought too.

The region number has to be the same between the disk and the player for the disk to work.

There are disks out there that are encoded as region 0 (zero) that will play in all regions and you can buy DVD players that are multi-region that will play disks from all the regions.

The reason for this is to stop people from buying cheap DVD disks elsewhere in the world and then playing them at home.

It means you have a DVD that was produced fr another country or region.

DVDs produced or the American market wont work on European or Asian DVD player and vice Versa.

There are a few different regions so you need to make sure you get the appropriate DVD for where you live or buy a multi-region DVD player.

Each DVD is encoded for a format for the contry you live in. In the UK we are region 2. Some DVDs suport more then one region and some are said to be region free which means that regradless of the region of your DVD player it will play.

So basicly both the DVD and DVD player have to suport the same region coding.

We have different regions as diffrent countrys use different standards for creating the image you see on screen of which the UK uses PAL.

You're playing an imported DVD on a certain player. In which case, smash it to pieces and buy a Region 0 Player, raising your middle finger to capitalism.

"Each DVD-Video disc contains one or more region codes, denoting the area[s] of the world in which distribution and playback are intended. The commercial DVD player specification dictates that a player must only play discs that contain its region code. In theory, this allows the motion picture studios to control the various aspects of a release (including content, date and price) on a region-by-region basis."
