If Iraq can gain a stable and peaceful government, one which seeks the welfare of all it's people, and is able to support itself in all this, we will have won.
More significantly, the people of Iraq will have won.
But none of the Middle Eastern countries stand alone and the welfare and politics of each affects the others. And so whether a political and military stability can be reached throughout the whole area is the final determining factor. And both Iran and Hezbollah are out there like loose cannons. So....

Strangely it's a war that can not be won but it is a war that must be fought. Terrorists don't have boundaries. Even if they no longer are in Iraq they will be like cockroach's and just move next door. Terror in the name of religion will be with us for ever. Many countries have known this for a thousand years. The U.S. only woke up on 9/11.

We lost from the moment we went in. This war will go on for a very long time and sooner or later the Coalition forces will pull out and Iraq will fall even further into civil war.

Right now no can tell. We'd have to wait when all foreign troops have been withdrawn and see how effective the Iraqi government runs things. If sectarian violence escalates to outright civil war (as many experts predict as inevitable) it would be a clear sign that the Iraq invasion and objective failed. Worst case scenario: government troops loses to insurgents, mass defections, total breakdown of law & order... Iran will gain greater influence through its proxy militiamen in Iraq. A spectre as frightening to Sunni Arab governments as to Israel and America. That is why it is so difficult for the US and the UK to pullout from Iraq.

There is a common proverb " the winner will laugh at the end, not when it starts"
We have to wait and see which party is rushing leave his position, and battlefield is free.
Right now, the battlefield is still crowded with many contestants and allies.
the sign of US lost is to see every military personnel feeing to nearest helicopter to leave Iraq, and the US government trying to emulate favourable scenario to to withdraw (flee) as soon a spossible.
The sign of US winning is to see US Constitution and Fedral Laws implemented in place in Iraq, and no bullets are shot in Iraq, and perhaps, all Iraqis granted US Citizenship

ya know.. I saw this question posted on an AOL article and I was furious. This war is not to be "won or lost".. its about ridding the world of terrorism.. according to the govt. And, that will NEVER fully happen until civilization as a whole is destroyed.

If the US is forced out Saigon style, then its definitely lost.
If the US evacuates and a theocracy is imposed, its lost but will claim victory.
If the US leaves after free elections and the entire place turns friendly like Qatar, then its won.
The US can win the war but its definitely loosing the peace.
