Just got Adobe Photoshop 4.0. When I go to "My Pictures" in my computer & click on any photo, it starts up photoshop......I hate that!

I just want to look through a folder in "My Pictures" & click through the photos quickly. I don't want photoshop poping up every d*mn time because then I have to open each picture separately through photoshop to view it. In case it matters, I bought it as a download from Adobe, not a download from Limewire etc. I have Photoshop 2.0 & it didn't happen with that.

Is there an option in photoshop 4.0 to turn off & if so what are the steps?

Much thanks --- Badass Art Girl

It's a function of the operating system to determine what program to use when opening a file. Photoshop may have set that when you installed it, but you can change that from photoshop to another program.

Go to My Pictures and right-click on one of the photo files. You will then se an option to Open With... Click on that and you will be able to choose another program to use for opening the file. Be sure to check the box that say to always use this program to ope this file.

Alright. Just do these steps from here ok?

Go to your My Pictures again. Right click on the photo and go to 'Open With' and scroll down to 'Choose Program'. From there, you can see a box menu, and at the first bar it says 'Recommended Programs', and select on the 'Windows Picture and Fax Viewer'. After that, you look down below the menu, and you will see a check box written 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file' and click on the box. Voila, problem solved and your window will open up the preview file rather than opening photoshop whenever you want to view it.

Here is the summarized steps you can refer to.

My Picture (or any windows explorer)>Right click photo>Open With>Choose program>Click Windows Picture and Fax Viewer + Select 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'= Problem solved.

Hope this works on you (kinda hoping you're not using Mac). I've had this problem before.

I used Photoshop 4.o 10 years ago and I forgot most of the functions. If you have 6.0 or after, you can either make contact sheets or use the web site function to create a web photo gallery. Both commands are automatic, all you need to do is to organize your photos in one folder.

Well, the open with option is kinda nice but you have to do that for each file type. What you really want to do is change the File Association.

Open Windows Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types -> Highlight the file type you want and click on Change -> Select the new program you want the image to open in. From here you can change the file associaton for jpeg, jpg, gif, bmp, tif, targa, etc...

Just right click the photo and select preview. You can look through all you photos that way without to much work.
