Put the puppy outside several times a day until it does its business. There also are pads you can buy at PetSmart that have some sort of scent to them and attracks the puppy to it for their business. They worked quite well when I trained mine.

Do NOT put down newspaper or those "piddle pads," no matter what people say. You don't want the puppy getting the notion that it is EVER okay to go in the house even if it's on the paper/pad. Once they start going in the house it is really, really hard to break them of that.

After you give your puppy water/food, take him/her for a walk and when they pee or poop praise them like they've just done the best thing EVER! (I still tell my dog "oh what a GOOD GIRL!" when she goes and she's 3 yrs old now).

If you notice the puppy start to sniff around scoop him/her in your arms and turn them over on their backs, take them outside and again when he/she goes, lavish the praise.

Take your puppy out every couple of hours. Yes, even in the middle of the night! It was rough for about 6-8 weeks, getting up at 2 and 4am but it was absolutely worth it because my pup had all of ONE accident in the house. They will get the point early on that their "toilet" is outside not in the house! When they mature they will actually let you know they need to go out by going to the door or nudging you with their heads.

Now that my dog is 3, I know her habits like clockwork: 1 walk early in the morning around 6am. Another around 11am and then again around 5-5:30pm and last walk at 9pm and she's good for the night.

Good luck!

lol... good luck! I'm going through this now and it is never easy but PATIENCE is definately required!!!

First off, keep in mind that the stomach/urinary tract muscles are one of the last to develop in a puppy... so don't be upset if s/he just stands there and pees... or pees while sleeping.

Crate training is the best method... it allows two things to happen... first, it contains the mess and hopefully the pup will tire of sleeping in their pee. Second... if you use papers to line the crate, you can simply move the papers closer and closer to the door with each "accident". This will teach YOU that every time your pup heads to those papers, s/he has to go. The should be taken outside everytime they finish eating or drinking as their stomachs are so small they can't hold all that fluid with what's already in their urinary tract.

As those papers make it closer and closer to the door, you can eventually remove the papers and your pup will go to the door when s/he has to pee. By then, their muscles will have developed sufficiently enough to "hold" their pee until they can make it to the papers and eventually outside!

And don't foget to praise your pup every time they pee outside. A small scolding can ocurr when "accidents" happen inside. When you see them start to squat, pick them up and take them out... then praise them. Papers are a good idea regardless of what nquizzitiv says.

I just have got a Boxer thats 12 wks. old. I take her out every hour and 20 min. after eating or drinking. During night time you can put her in a crate or mine sleeps with me. Reward your puppy with doggy treats ONLY when going outside. I do one treat if she goes pee and two if she goes poop outside. Let the dog know if it has done a good job by praising it and if it goes on the floor I rub its nose in it and whip it with a newspaper. It takes patience and time but don't take the dog out too often for it confuses it as to why it is going outside. This has proved to be very successful.

Remember: dogs are not born knowing they go potty outside, not on your rug.
Crate train and when she is not in her crate watch her every second. Dogs go through a routine before they eliminate, some sniff, some circle... when you see that pick her up and run outside and say hurry up (whatever you want the cue to be). If she goes outside, praise her ton. Not just a "good dog", throw a party, run around in circles, give her a piece of cooked hotdog.
Obviously you must take her outside often, I would say every hour, but dogs must go after they eat sleep and exercise. Take her out, say hurry up, when she goes praise and go inside.
If you take your eyes off of her and she goes and you don't see her doing it, that is your fault, do not punish her because she will not know why she is in trouble. If you catch her in the act, make a loud noise to stop her and rush her outside. Praise her after she goes. Don’t smack her if she pees in the house, she may just try to hold it forever and develop bladder problems, something you really don’t want. Don’t correct after the fact. If the dog is corrected after the fact, it will not connect the correction with the behavior, and will begin to think that corrections are random, and that the owner cannot be trusted. This results in a bad relationship and a dog that does not connect corrections, which are believed random, with bad behaviors even when they are applied in time. When she does have an accident, be sure to clean it up with natures miracle or something made specifically for urine stains or she will go back to that spot to eliminate again.
I cannot tell you how helpful a crate has been in housebreaking my puppy. He has never had an accident in his crate and when I get him out of his crate we go directly outside (I carry him) and he pees.
I do not recommend pee pads or paper training. When you use pee pads, you are teaching your dog to go potty in your house. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want my dog peeing anywhere in my house, pee pad or no pee pad.

There are specific times during the day when your puppy will need to go: first thing in the morning, after eating/drinking, after playing, after nap time, after playing, after eating/drinking, after playtime, before bedtime. Always try to take him/her out at least during those times. Until he/she is actually trained, you may have to let him/her out more frequently than mentioned. If he/she "goes" in the house, simply pick him/her up and take them gently outside. He/she will soon make the connection. When outside, be patient and let him/her finish completely before bringing him/her back inside. Never discipline your puppy for "going" in the house. Puppies naturally want to go outside to do their thing and will go inside only when they cannot hold it any longer. Disciplining or shouting at your puppy will not help, it will make things worse by creating anxiety in your puppy. If you'll pay attention, you'll soon begin to see the signs that he/she is looking for a place to "go". Female puppies generally learn faster than males. Be patient, be loving, be gentle and your puppy will learn soon enough. Good luck.

Take the puppy outside every 1/2 hour and tell him/her to "GO POTTY"(very helpful in the long run.) Then when he/she goes potty throw him/her a party, get excited, GOOD BOY/GIRL, GOOD POTTY, then give a treat. This is the quickest and easiest way that I know to housebreak a puppy. Good luck to you.

well i just got a siberian husky, and what i do with him is before he comes in the house from bieng outside hes has to go to the bathroom and i tell him to go "potty" and he goes and then comes in but for now you have to do that and when the dog goes in the house say " no sir or no mam " if you say thier name they wont learn it because they relate it to trouble.... use their name when they do go to the bathroom or sit or do something good. but when you use it when they are in trouble they will associate that name to be bad....its like when you were a kid and your mom had a tone and a name when you were in trouble....( for me it was my middle name.....:( ) but this dog will get the hang of this potty thing and he will learn but for no you might want to buy puppy training pads they go on them when they have to but it does get your floors damaged. on these websites on the one book with the dog just find your breed but use the type of book they will tell you whay to feed and eveything!
