I assume you are going to get a dog: try to be more specific in future

It depends on your lifestyle and where you live - don't get a big, active dog if you live in an apartment and are always gone.

Don't get a dog unless you are COMMITTED to taking care of it for the next 12 or so years and will be around a lot. Dogs need people and leaving them in a cage or alone for 15 hours a dya is not fair to them.

As far as breeds, here is AKC on breeds - gives you a littel on each - think abotu what you want and then look for a breed that matches your lifestyle.

I currently have 3 dogs and have had many dogs in my life. My hands down favorite breed is the Boston terrier. I have never met a better dog. They are small enough to keep in smaller homes, but large enough that they enjoy a good walkor tumble in the park. They aren't bred for any other purpose other than to be a pet so their hunting insticnts aren't too much ( like a beagle or a lab, etc) They are usually very affectonate but not too selfish....they are a great liitle companion dog. ( also very smart) the only trouble is due to their large bug-eyes. You must be cautious not to get them poked in the eyes( especially by toddlers) because you can mes up their eyes. But otherwise an all around great dog.

That all depends on if you are looking for a small, medium, large, or extra large breed.
I think that you will find most of your pure breed are very hyper, the best thing to do is go to the local shelter, rescue group, ASPCA, SPCA, and get a mix. They make wonderful companions. Good luck.
