How long have you had them and why did you grow them?

You DO grow dreadlocks. I've had mine for 5 years. I got tired of chemicals destroying my hair. The high cost of hair maintenance also was a factor. I enjoy having a very low maintenance hair style. I just wash them as go! I can wear them up or down. I love my dreads.

I do not have them. I get too bored too quickly with my hair to have such a permanent style. My older sister and her 8 year old daughter have them. Her 6 year old son asked her if he could get them too, so his hair is being grown out for them now. Oh, please don't call them DREADlocks....she says they are just LOCKS, no dread about them.
She got them because she is an artist and associates with many "conscious" or "conscienscious" ethic black people who look down upon using chemicals in the hair. So she stopped with the chemical: relaxers, that is. She also just thinks they're beautiful.

Ewww no. I think they look nasty. Very rarely do I see some that looks as if the person is taking care of them.
