well first of all everyone who answered this question was "Wrong." Vincent Van Gogh suffered from Depression and a life of solitude and loneliness. Van Gogh had a disease called Vertigo which caused him to hear a loud and annoying buzzing from his ear 24/7. This buzzing drove him insane along with alot of his other problems along with it. He eventually became so frustrated and annoyed that out of anger he cutt off his ear and because of his artistic and eccentric personality he decided to give it to a prostitute which was also the love of his life....

no, he's just crazy and really loved to drink his paint and paint thinners. he really did cut that off and send it to a girl he liked.
