This is not a simple answer. If the product is from the US (CA), it's probably a blend of anyone of the grapes traditionally grown in Rhone valley in France. Those grapes would be Grenache (most likely), Syrah, Malbec, Mourvedre and Cinsault. A CA producer might also add Zinfandel, although that's not a grape that came from the Rhone region.

If it's from France, then it's likely to be a legit Grenache wine that didn't conform to the higher and more demanding AOC laws (you would see "Cotes du Rhone" or other such appelation specified on the label).

There are no legal bounderies for such a term in CA, BTW. It can be anything, as long as its made with 75% red wine grapes. So basically, it can be a devise to sell the stuff that they can't otherwise.

Well, I'm not sure. But I saw your lonely little question sitting here with no one paying any attention to it so I'm popping in to say "Hi"! I'm assuming the answer to your first question is a Wine, um, Red? LOL as to the grapes? Well, if it taste good, who cares? Just enjoy!
