I'm just about to move into a lovely rented property - however the bathroom is very small and a bit dark. The suite is white but looking its age and so are the tiles. The walls are white too and newly painted. Any suggestions on brightening up the space without spending too much money as its rented?

Well, first you need to get in writing from the landlord that he/she gives permission for you to paint, or lay new floor tiling, etc. to the bathroom. You'd be surprised how many *nice* landlords will charge you for actually improving their property when you go to move out. They'll call it 'damage' or something silly even though you improved it.

For a small bathroom you always go with light and airy. Value City, Wal-Mart, Target - those kind of stores usually carry stick on tiles or flooring that looks like real wood. It's inexpensive, and easy to cut. You just stick it down over the exsisiting tiles.

Lace curtains on a shower always look so elegant, and beautiful, plus they really lighten up the room and give it a romantic airy feeling. Small new pictures on the walls will add to the romance. Think soft muted flowers, beautiful women from the old days, or pressed flowers from outside.

Soft but well lit is good, get a strip of lights to go over the sink, and spend the few extra dollars for long life light bulbs that cast a natural warm light. If the bathroom has a window put lace up on it to match the shower curtain.

If you're young or more into the modern look - you could go with silver chrome accents, and funky cool fun colors. Just don't overwhelm the eyes with too many bright colors. Tons of cheap plastic nick nacks, and bathroom supplies.. You know, pink wasebaskets, and purple tooth brush holders, etc.

i would suggests picking a theme, its a bathroom so making something like under the sea wuld be cute, if you decide for instance to go with a such theme paint the walls a light but bright blue. bye all kinds of accessories.. it'll lok great. however if you dont want a theme than I would suggest going with a BRIGHT coulor for the walls, do new white tiles, whatever colour you do the walls, dont accesorize in the same the same. for example: if you paint your wals bright red, do chocolate brown mats, and shower curtains, its a nice combination. It will look elegant and classy... to save on money go to dicount stores, dollerstores, scond hand stores etc. and have the landlord pay for the tiles simply becase they need to be replaced and its not like you can ake them when you move. also have him/ her purchase the paint. Good luck with ur bathroom , hope my advice helps.

I would paint the ceiling an off white and the walls a lovely pale blue to give it a bit of a nautical theme. I would search for a suitable border to put on the wall where it meets the ceiling. Buy some really nice big shells as ornaments and a moisture loving green plant.

Accesorise, plants, shells and a big mirror to reflect the light .
White and Green are great colours to have in the bathrooms. Ferns do well in bathrooms, and look lovely hanging from the ceiling.

As for working with a budget, Charity shops are an absolute godsend!!
Car boot sales are a good idea as well - as long as you're up for a good barter.
If you go to your local garden center and ask for any reduced plants that are on their way out, a little T.L.C will bring them back to life.

Hope you find all you need.

If it a bathroom with a shower/tub that has a pole for a shower curtain ...you could buy a really colorful one and work off those colors or theme. I used a Beach scene and brought into my bath the blues of the ocean and picked up a couple inexpensive pictures that matched the shower curtain. If not pick three colors that go well together and pick up some curtains ans items in those color and have fun decorating

you can give the suite a really good clean with some powerful cleaners, also remove limescale from the taps, and re-do the white sealent on the edges of the bath. these will make a lot of difference and will cost about a tenner and some elbow grease.

Green plants will help, also bright accessories. Go for chrome if you like minimalist, it reflects the light well. Use the biggest wall mirror you can to increase the sense of space and light
