I'll calculate it this way.
First to find out no.of males, ie 45% population. Reduce by youngsters/elderly who dont play( golf) ie, nett 37.5% population.
Add: similar 37.5% to account for past players. This figure into
60 bales(being an average balls used by each)=no.of balls used. To this we may very well add, say 23 to25%, being stock in manufacture, transit, at wholesalers, unsold at clubs, stock with clubs,and balls stolen, in colletions of trophies.
Unfortunately, I do not have the population figures of UK.
Wish I had, then I could have worked the nearest figure.

according to the telegraphs annual poll , it was estimated to be around 3465776232123 golf balls in the uk...
approximately....675987 are lost, and 3 are in the north sea.....
