Ok, look. I appreciate your priority setting on this issue, you and your wife are both right. I tend to think like you but your wife tends to think like my wife. I think that the hot tub is really the best choice, but sometimes you can make a decision that isn't necessarily the best decision and not feel bad about it. What I've had to do is let my wife get her way on things, and the next time she complains (and the next 50 that the kids hurt) I will mention that 5-7 years of a working hot tub was a better decision than a week's vacation.
Solution:
You are comparing the price of a new hot to to a week's vacation. You can plan a cheaper-shorter trip to the Dell's and get a slightly used hot tub. Please contact Blue-Green Resorts and tell them you are interested in one of those "Timeshare" vacations where they put you up in a nice hotel for 2 or 3 nights and all you have to do is attend a 1 hr presentation on the Timeshare. I've done this for the Dells last year, also am planning on doing a Vegas trip the same type of deal. They are cool and the only way to go for me. I just cancelled a Dells trip for one of these as well as my wife couldn't take the time off work. This one would give you 3 or 4 Mt Olympus tickets and put you up in the nicest hotel in the Dells. It's perfect and all you have to pay for is food and transportation.
Hope this helps, oh yeah, and for the hot tub just look into the classifieds for a slightly used hot tub, fortunately this house has one in it, but if not I would have gone that route.

The vacation is a one-time thing, if it goes well, it would be long remembered, if it ends up disastrous, then it won't do you any good.
The hot tub, on the other hand, is a long-term investment. It not only gives you and your family more time to relax but also it makes you guys spend more time together as a family, whether you, your wife (or both of you), bathing your kids or let them play the rubber duck on the tub, it's altogether a pure enjoyment and relaxation for all in the family. At the same time, having a hot tub is like a vacation at home. Like you and your family will look forward to go home everyday because a hot tub is waiting.
Either one you choose, wish you have a nice time there!

Vacation = some pictures they will look at every couple of years, and a story they might be able to tell once in a while.
Hot Tub = a luxury item that will need repair or fixing every few years, while giving everyone something to do every once in a while.
Best bet? Put it back towards the house and get out of debt as soon as possible, so you can start trying to save. However, if that is not an option, I'd put the foot down and buy the Hot Tub. A vacation is a fleeting memory, and with the hot tub at least you'd have something to physically touch for years to come.

Even though the hot tub sounds really soothing (I know, I have arthritis and fibromyalgia), I think the family could use a vacation. I would try to put a little money aside for the hot tub, if you think you can afford the upkeep on it. I would ask the family to compromise a little, shorten the vacation...maybe a weekend. then see what is left over for the hot tub. You really need to research the hot tub better and find out how much it will REALLY cost you in the end!

Why not try both.....
Sounds like you have explained your hot tub theory until you were blue in the face. Why not try to get a hot tub, which definately sounds VERY beneficial to all, and try to get a weekend away at the same time.
We were dying for a vacation this summer and didn't have a lot of money to throw down for it. We were able to take a long weekend away from home and have a ball with the kids. For our family of five, we only spent about $300 for 4 days.
Maybe with some careful budgeting, you can find a way to get what you ALL want and need. Maybe try looking at a cheaper model hot tub and find somewhere close to home to get away for a couple of days.
Good luck to you!!

You aren't really supposed to go in the hot tub at all when you are pregnant. First, second, or third trimester. It can raise your blood pressure too high, and your body temperature. Also, you can get different kind of viruses and infections from hot tubs, which can be serious and life threatening to your baby. I know there is no certain answer, but wouldn't that uncertainty mean that there is a chance it could harm your baby? And if there is a chance, unproven or not, wouldn't it just be safer to not risk it?

Definitely the hot tub. The vacation will be over in a week- bu the benefits from the hot tub will be there all year round.

I have a hot tub. It costs $100 per month to maintain it, and I am in it three or four time a year. To do it over, I'd have put the money into a nice bath tub with jets. The kind of tub you can fill and drain each time you use it.

I would do the hot tub. Sounds like you might need it not just for your health but to get away from your wife and kids. If her parents want her to go let them foot the bill. Think about it. You are traveling with your family with "her" family.... Sounds like a big headache to me.
