They don't always, at least not all males. Some will lift their leg just to pee in the grass and some don't even lift their leg all the time, they squat sometimes too.

Male dogs prefer to mark their territory, so thus the reason why they pee on trees and fire hydrants. As for raising thier legs, they do it for 1 of 2 reasons: 1) make the most of their marking na dmakes it easier to aim, and 2) they don't pee on their legs.

It's hormonal. Generally only unneutered males do it, and they don't start till they reach sexual maturity (between 6 - 12 months, usually). And the reason they do it on trees, tires, etc., is to leave their mark. When other dogs come along, it's like a community board : 'Rover was here'. So, then the females know a virile guy is around, and the other males will promptly go on that same spot, too, to leave their calling card. Maybe it's actually more like a doggie dating ritual, come to think of it? Hmmmm.

canines react with the aid of the tone of your voice. in view that your voice is decrease, and particular louder, than your fiancee's, your dogs is extra demanding once you yell at him. Peeing is a demanding reaction. once you seize him interior the act, say 'no' and then supply him some thing he's authorized to bite. That way you supply him an 'out' with the aid of distracting him together with his own toy rather of him in simple terms status there nervously, no longer comprehend what comes next. once you get homestead after being long previous and locate he has chewed some thing, discipline does no longer something as a results of fact the dogs does not comprehend why you're yelling at him. the actuality that he chewed up some thing formerly interior the day potential no longer something to him and so a techniques as he's familiar with, you're yelling at him for in simple terms status interior the room. he's barely 2 and nonetheless a domestic dog with the aid of Lab standards. protecting him interior the kitchen is a robust thought on a similar time as you're long previous and once you're homestead, in simple terms be sure he's interior eyesight on a similar time as interior the homestead.

A dog's scent capabilities are 100 times greater than ours. So though we do not smell a difference between male and female urine, they can.
Everyone so far has suggested dogs do this as a way of marking their territory....and they are absolutely correct. A dog will urinate to inform other male dogs that this is HIS area and as an invitation for females to come on over and become the party favor!!

They are marking their territory & that is the easiest way to do it. On the ground isn't as good as up on a tree closer to the next nose.
They don't get pee on themselves if they lift a leg.
Female dogs are built slightly differently & don't have that problem.

boy dogs want to claim that they are the best, the most attractive, the strongest, the most influential in the neightbourhood. they want to make themselves look bigger, so they want to wee as high as they can, to make others think that they are tall>big and strong. and if he wees on a highest point on a wall or a post, his wee doesn't have to be erased with other dogs' wee. it's called marking, and it's a lot like leaving messages on bbs boards and then browsing around. your doggie must also smell and check on other doggie's wee, to know what kind of other guys are around in the neighbourhood, and when they find other guys' wee mark, they tend to overwrite it with their own wee!!! a lot like message board communication, don't you think???
