Debra,

Interestingly enough, Jesus said virtually the same thing. He said " One does not light a lamp, and place it under a basket, but places it on a lamp stand, and the whole house receives light". (paraphrase). Through many years of religious and philosophical study, I have come to the conclusion that there is a deeper meaning to these sayings. I believe that when we actually invite the Spirit of God into our lives, He literally enters, and dwells in our hearts. We are then transformed into new creatures, with the values of spirituality guiding our behavior. Materialism and fear, begin to die out. The light of God's Presence, shines out in us, illuminating the darkness that seems to fill the world. Thus, we have become a candle, shedding the light of love all around us. Without the Presence of His Spirit, we have no light, and cannot see the Path ourselves, let alone show it to others.

You're not posting in the christian section. There is none! So no worries.

I also love this quote. It's so applicable to every day life.

Although I'm usually a candle lighter, there are times when I really enjoy cursing the darkness!

Thank you Debra M. I agree with you wholeheartily. There is so much negativeness from people who claim to have a religion that is suposed to love our neighbors. I am Catholic and I even feel the condemnation from other christians because I believe in Mary and the Saints. All the religions are based on love but then they are different in their teachings which makes the followers hate the other people in the world. I don't think that is what is intented from the teachings in any religion. Please keep lighting your candle- peace.

its the first ime i'v heard this and i totally agree. its implications are universal and can be applied to pretty much every situation. its a great quote which to me implies that in any situation, dont sit around and do nothing but complain- do something and explain!! this will lead to others taking an example and others will light candles to and stop cursing the darkness and by the end the world will be full of light and there will be no darkness! cool hey.

Absolutely right. That's what I'm here for - Trying to be the voice of reason, a light in the darkness.

love that quote
we are all small candles in a very dark world .. but by placing so many candles together you can shine so bright
may we all place our candles together , from every part of the world , from every culture and religion .... and be a united beacon of love and hope !

If you consider that Jesus is the light unto the world you would only need one candle, that is in reference to Him .So if you lit the candle(your faith) by believing in Jesus Christ yoou would have the light of the wprld with that one candle.

To me it means it is better to get involved in what you believe in that set on the sidelines and piss and moan about everything.
