It is a system that allows those in the military to either pass the buck to others or obscure blame, or to focus blame away from ones self and on to others. It operates the same way as the Catholic church, so that ideas can be crushed before they become a pesky nuisance, much the way confession works.

Military Chain Of Command

The chain of command is an important structure in the military.

First it allows problem to be handeled and the lowest possible stage in the command. If a troop has a problem he would go to his NCO first before the shirt or commander this way he aint stepping on people feet and everyone is aware of the situation so they can get it fixed.

You also have to think of it in a war situation. If there was no chain of command then everyone would think they are in charge. If an NCO tells a private to go do this or not the private knows to just go do it. If there was no chain of command then the private would prob try to tell the NCO off and then he will prob end up by getting shot by the enemy.

You work your way through the chain of command by rank and experience. This is why no one is going to question an order coming from someone higher ranking with more experience.

The Chain of Command is the basic principle around every military in the world is wrapped.

It is the link between the civilian government that goes all the way down to the lowliest private, for one thing. It ensures that all pertinent orders and information is passed downwards in order to make sure that things get done.

It gives a clear definition of the hierarchical structure, which is a must in order to ensure discipline and the smooth running of operations. If anything, the Chain of Command is the most essential concept in the military.

It also goes from bottom to top. The Chain of Command is also there to assist more junior personnel when it comes to personal administration, the passing of reports and in dealing with some personal issues. By that token, the Chain is there to support the lower levels as well as to direct them, because for some problems, you have to go fairly high up to see them solved.

The Chain of Command is the lifeblood of the services.

It is the route of communications that has the military unit working as a team: information goes up the Chain, and Commands and Instruction go down the Chain.

It is also the Order of Command ( and Responsibility) of the actions of the Unit.

Without a working Chain of Command, a unit will have its members going to all directions, doing all kinds of things and getting nowhere ( and eventually destroying the Unit ).

The Chain of Command is vital. You work for someone. That person is responsible for everything you do and everything you fail to do. You receive your orders from that person. Span of control.

That way the Major General commanding a Division does not have to tell each Private what to do. The CG (Commanding General) tells the four Brigade or Regimental commanders what to do. They in turn tell the three/four Battalion or Squadron commanders what to do. They give orders to the three to five Company/Battery/Troop commanders. These commanders give orders to the three to five Platoon leaders who give orders to three/four squad leaders. The Squad leader gives orders to individual soldiers.

The intermediate leaders get to use their skills and abilities to accomplish the mission. They also get to develop the skill set needed to lead at the next higher level.

You can fill in the blanks about the efficiency of this system. You can also fill in the blanks about what could happen if this system was allowed to break down.

The more people you deal with the more opportunity for chaos.

The chain of command is in place to allow people to recieve orders and execute them. It also plays heavily into the morale of a unit, and the troop welfare.

Great answer above. I would like to add this. When problems come up, you want to get it taken care of at the lowest level possible. When you "jump the chain" too many people get involved and it gets thrown out of proportion. 12 Years USAF
