Gift certificates for meals from a nice restaurant that can be carried out and brought home so she doesn't have to cook.

Cleaning service.

Home cooked meals delivered prior to meal time or frozen for later.

Someone who is willing to run errands and pick things up at the store, etc.

DO NOT buy bottles or formula unless you KNOW FOR SURE that they will use them. A breastfeeding mom could be hurt or insulted by such a gift!

It's wonderful that you are so thoughtful concerning what gift to give you friends:) I'm a mother of two, and I know something they are sure to use repeatedly and rely on for an entire year is a book called The What to Expect the First Year. I read through it and referenced it many times when I was a new mom. It's extremely helpful, cost is $10.50-15.00 I believe.

"The What to Expect the First Year Book is a comprehensive month-by-month guide that clearly explains everything parents need to know about the first year with baby. The What to Expect the First Year Book features an illustrated baby care primer, first-aid and safety guides and answers to all your questions. The What to Expect the First Year Book is the only book on infant care to address the physical as well as the emotional needs of the entire family."

Seriously... this might sound crazy but call a company like "Merry Maids" or something (that's a big one here in the states) and see if you can get them a package of like a few house cleanings or something. It's a great gift and I'm sure the new family would like to not have to worry about keeping up with housework during this special time. They will come in and do laundry, clean, wash dishes, vacuum, etc and that will give parents and baby time to spend together and not have to do that stuff. Good luck in whatever you choose, I'm sure they'll appreciate it!

A gift card to the local baby store is always appreciated. I don't know if you have Babies R US where you are (or if they do where they are), but that's been our favorite haunt since well before our daughter was born. There is always something that they will be needing, a gift card will come in very handy.

Of course, the real answer is sleep. So if you're willing to spell them for a couple of hours so they can get some rest, they will be eternally grateful!

If they don't have a bouncy seat (I don't know if you know what that is, it's a little wire frame with a fabric covering, the good ones have a toy bar, vibrate and play music, whenever the baby wiggles it bounces just a tiny bit) get them one. It is the one thing I have appreciated most with all three of my kids. In my house it was the one thing that garaunteed I could have both hands for fixing a meal, could finish a bath in peace, or just generally could put the baby down for a few minutes whenever I needed and know baby was safe and happy. They are the absolute best baby invention ever.

If they already have one of those, diapers is probably second choice, 'cause they are gonna spend a LOT of money on those.

Lots of great ideas in this list already like a maid service or bringing meals to the house, gift certificates and diapers. The best gift's I ever got were for making impressions of handprints and footprints. Flowers are something to be looked after and not really what a new mom needs considering her hands are already full.

Actually, the baby shower has usually taken care of most of baby's necessities, and most women do not care to get anymore clotthes for baby. The most appreciated gift for a new mom or new family is a gift of housecleaning from a local housekeeping company!!! Make a lasagna up, but don't cook it. Send it over so that they can just pop it in the oven for dinner. The best gift you can give them is more time for this little one they are getting to know. Thanks for asking, because most men just show up with a stuffed animal!!!!

anything for the baby will be great but what i always do when one of my friends has a baby i buy the baby gift, always offer to baby sit for an evening/overnight depending on how brave you are and i always buy a gift for the mom whether it be some bubble bath and a new pair of slippers or a gift certificate for her favourite store
Most people only buy for the baby but i always remember the mom too since she was then one who did all the work

Anyways Good Luck

I like Cherstin's answer.

I'm a father of four kids. I would think a gift certificate to a nice restaurant, or better yet the gesture of picking up a nice take out meal from that restaurant for mom and dad to eat at home would be welcome. This would give them a relatively quiet evening at home without having to cook, and it would give them a nice meal that they would not have to pack the baby and worry about disturbing others while they ate.

Tell her she is a beautiful mother and her baby is a precious child in the makings of a wonderful love between her and her husband. She will fall at your feet and cry too!! Words are so much better than gifts. No Gift can give quite as much as you can as a person.
