The idea of tossing a salad comes from the practice of putting a dressing, such as French dressing on a bowl of mixed salad/ Tossing is achieved by the use of two salad forks, wooden or plastic utensils to mix the salad up by tossing it up and down in the bowl and thus distribute the dressing all over the ingredients without it settling on the bottom of the bowl. Generally done just before the salad is served and the use of wooden or plastic forks stoops the salad from bruising.
